Experts from Russia and Iran begin a series of meetings on regional security issues 🇮🇷
Last week, the first online working meeting of the Russian-Iranian working group was addressed the topic "Security Dilemmas in the South Caucasus: Policies of Russia and Iran".
🔵 The Russian-Iranian working group is a new platform for dialogue between experts from Russia and Iran, dedicated to the interaction of countries on a wide range of regional issues.
Within the framework of the working group, several online and offline thematic meetings are planned till the year’s end, where experts will be able to exchange views and develop joint approaches to solving regional problems.
🔵 The events are organized by the Primakov Center, the MGIMO Institute for International Studies, and the Institute for Iran-Eurasia Studies (IRAS).

New Report on the Future of Russia-Iran Relations
While our mission participants are exploring the work of the IAEA and other international organizations in Vienna, the Primakov Center hosted a presentation of a new analytical report prepared by Elena Dunaeva, Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Middle East Studies, Institute of Oriental Studies RAS.
The study offers a comprehensive analysis of Russian-Iranian interaction in the current geopolitical context. Special attention is paid to the development of the North-South Transport Corridor and trade cooperation within the Iran-EAEU Free Trade Zone.
The report presentation evolved into a vibrant expert discussion, covering a wide range of issues — from the impact of the U.S. election outcomes on Iranian policy to the prospects of economic cooperation in the Eurasian region.
The English version will be published soon.
The discussion brought together leading Russian experts on Iran from research centers and academic institutions.

Russia and Iran: Balancing Interests in Syria 🇮🇷
On February 12, a closed meeting of the Russian-Iranian expert working group took place, during which the situation in Syria and prospects for cooperation in the Middle East region were discussed.
🗣 Leading experts from the Primakov Center, the Institute for International Studies, IMEMO, the Center for Iranian and Eurasian Studies, and the University of Tehran participated in the discussion.
The researchers examined Syria’s political landscape, the impact of external factors on the conflict’s development, and the strategic positions of Moscow and Tehran in the Middle East under new circumstances. Special attention was given to the prerequisites for a power transition in Syria, the consequences of the Syrian crisis for bilateral cooperation, and prospects for further engagement.
The Russian-Iranian working group will continue its activities in 2025, with a series of thematic meetings already planned to further develop bilateral relations.
