Hydro tower was built in 1905 and now it is one of the oldest buildings on Polytech territory. Nowadays, it looks like watchtower of a medieval castle, the height of tower is 46 meters and the water tank’s volume is 200 cubic meters.

First of all, it was built to ensure the operation of university’s water supply system until 1950s. There was air defense observation post during the Great War. However now it is a place for studying and a monument of Polytechnic University.
A hydraulic laboratory nearby was opened in 1905 with the help of Professor Joseph Gavrillovich Esman. Now it is a workplace of FabLab, where students can implement their ideas and projects.

Every building of Polytech campus has its own interesting story. What is your favorite place to study in?

Thanks to @aero.tapok for the great photos! 💚

Why Polytechnic University is named after Peter the Great? 🤔

📣 The coming year will be marked by the 350th anniversary of Peter the Great.

In 1909 (the 10th anniversary year), the Saint Petersburg Polytechnic Institute’s Council decided to petition Emperor Nicholas II for the Institute to be named after Peter the Great.

In1910, Emperor Nicholas II signed a Decree «On naming the Institute «Emperor Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute».

On February 12, 2015, our university was returned to its historical name «Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University».
