Three flights took place in late May and early June in Swedish airspace, where the AI ​​independently controlled the aircraft, tracked targets, performed maneuvers, and prompted the pilot for the right moments to launch missiles.

In one of the flights, the Gripen E with AI fought a manned Gripen D, performing real combat missions without communication with external sources of information and guidance.

The Centaur AI assistant was trained using the method of intensive learning in a simulator, accumulating combat experience equivalent to 50 years in just a few hours.

It has gone through more than 500,000 hours of simulated battles and developed unconventional tactics for fighting beyond visual range.

Saab and Helsing stress that the system does not replace the pilot, but can significantly enhance him in particularly fast-changing air combat conditions.

The tests are expected to continue and include running the AI ​​on two piloted aircraft simultaneously, as well as exploring the potential for other tasks, from electronic warfare to autonomous reconnaissance vehicles.
