Первый рассказъ Купринъ написалъ, ещё будучи 19-летнимъ курсантомъ, но его «Последний дебютъ» не получилъ ничего, помимо дисциплинарного взыскания отъ руководства военного училища. Будущего писателя посадили въ карцеръ на двое сутокъ, такъ какъ молодой военнослужащий не имелъ права на какие-либо публикации безъ письменного согласия высшего начальства. Невзирая на неудачный опытъ, Александр Ивановичъ продолжалъ писать. Въ отставке онъ познакомился съ несколькими выдающимися личностями, включая Чехова, Горького, Бунина. Именно Бунинъ помогъ раскрыть талантъ Куприна и подсобилъ тому съ публикациями. Какъ романтикъ писатель раскрылся въ рассказахъ «Олеся» и «Гранатовый браслетъ».

Есть среди произведений Александра Ивановича работы, за которые писатель привлекался къ ответственности. Къ числу таковыхъ относится повесть «Яма». Надъ повестью онъ работалъ на протяжении шести летъ – съ 1908 по 1914 гг., хотя замыселъ произведения родился ещё въ 1906 году. Купринъ первымъ среди русскихъ писателей осмелился раскрыть тему продажной любви и показать жизнь девушек въ «двухрублёвомъ заведении» во всей её чудовищной простоте.

Alexander Kuprin wrote his first story at the age of 19, yet he received nothing for his «Last Debut» but a disciplinary action from the headmasters of the military school he was studying at. The future writer was injailed in a lockup for two days, because as a young serviceman he had no right to publish any of his works without the written permission from the higher authorities. Despite this unfortunate experience Alexander Ivanovich didn’t give up writing. When he retired he met several prominent people, Chekhov, Gorky, and Bunin among them. It was Bunin who helped Kuprin bring out his talent and aided him in publishing his writings. «Olesya» and «The Garnet Bracelet» stories revealed Kuprin’s romantic identity.

There are works among Alexander Ivanovich’s writings that he was prosecuted for. One of those is «The Pit» novel. It took him six years – 1908 to 1914 – to write it, although the concept dates back to 1906. Kuprin was the first among Russian writers to dare to reveal the issue of venal love and to expose the women’s life in a «two-ruble institution» in all its gruesome simplicity.
