How Brain Size Affects Hunting Strategy in the Insect World
Cambridge researchers are studying what makes a brain efficient and how that affects behaviour in insects.
As in economics, there is a law of diminishing returns in neuroscience – doubling the investment going in doesn’t equal double the performance coming out. With a bigger brain comes more available resources that can be allocated to certain tasks, but everything has a cost, and evolution weighs the costs against the benefits in order to make the most efficient system.
Hennequin studies how brain circuits are wired in such a way that they become optimised for a task: how primates such as monkeys are able to estimate the direction of a moving object, for example. “How brain circuits generate optimal interpretations of ambiguous information received from imperfect sensors is still not known,” he says. “Coping with uncertainty is one of the core challenges that brains must confront.”

Dragonflies are much bigger, and can do things that killer flies can’t, but their size means they can’t turn or stop on a dime, like a killer fly can.

AI technology can be used in a wide range of different applications including waste management, recycling and cleaning. The introduction of AI powered waste management is becoming more common place in public infrastructure such as train stations, as it provides a more efficient method for the collection and sorting of waste. Specifically, the AI used for this purpose includes ‘bin-bots’, that are mobile robot bins that can move through a defined area within the station, to detect waste on the floor and people wanting to dispose of waste. These bin-bots contain systems that can measure the amount of waste in their compartments and will automatically transport the waste to the station bin collection centre when the compartment is full.

An artificial intelligence system built by Google DeepMind, the tech giant’s primary artificial intelligence lab, has achieved “gold medal” status in the annual International Mathematical Olympiad, a premier math competition for high school students.
It was the first time a machine — which solved five of the six problems at the 2025 competition, held in Australia this month — reached that level of success, Google said in a blog post on Monday.

With the coming of winter in northern climates, most frogs will hibernate underwater, where temperatures get very cold but crucially stay above freezing. Not wood frogs, who instead take shelter in leaf litter, ready to undergo an extraordinary transition. As the temperature drops below freezing, the frog freezes solid, with up to 70 per cent of the water in its body turning to ice.
Crucially, though, it is the liquid outside its cells and organs that freezes, rather than inside, where freezing would cause irreparable damage. The frog prevents its cells freezing by producing substances called cryoprotectants – essentially antifreeze made from glucose and urea.
More cryoprotectants are produced in populations in colder locations. This adaptation means that the wood frog can survive at temperatures as low as -16°C. During this time, the frog stops breathing, its heart stops beating and its kidneys stop functioning.
