We have an old superstition here that says if you light a cigarette or a candle with another candle, a fisherman dies. I decided to look that up now. Sounds illogical, right?
Turns out, it does have real meaning behind it.
Back in the old, fishermen were poor and off-season they would often sell matches. So by not buying their matches, it could eventually starve them to death.
I find it interesting to once again find a logical reason in old idioms. This one is common in Northern Europe and Eastern Europe.
Please comment if you've heard it in your country! :)

How Christian Was Europe, Really?
Let us take a look at the records of Adam of Bremen, who wrote about the Polabian Slavs living in what is today Eastern Germany—regions such as Mecklenburg, Pomerania, Holstein, and the island of Rügen. Adam, being a Christian priest, was clearly biased, but even he had to acknowledge certain truths. Here are some of his statements:
> "All the inhabitants still live in ignorance, according to their pagan rites. However, when it comes to morals and hospitality, no more honorable or kind people can be found."
He continues:
> "It seems that the Slavs and the Swedes still continue to practice their pagan rituals. All those who had been baptized quickly returned to their pagan customs and beliefs."
Further on, he writes:
> "Gold is abundant there, their horses are the best; all houses are filled with pagan seers, fortune-tellers, and sorcerers. Those who were once baptized under Prince Mistivoj soon returned to paganism and their ancient faith."
Contrary to his expectations, the Slavs were extremely hospitable toward him. Because of the prevailing Slavic paganism and what he considered "barbarism," he expected to be met with hostility as a Christian priest and missionary. Yet, despite his bias, Adam could not deny how noble and welcoming the Slavs were—even before Christianization.

In 2008, evolutionary anthropologist Katie Hinde was working in a primate research lab in California, analyzing breast milk. Everything looked ordinary — until one pattern refused to go away.
Mothers raising sons produced milk richer in fat and protein. Mothers raising daughters produced a larger volume with different nutrient balances. It was consistent. Repeatable. And deeply uncomfortable for the scientific consensus.
Colleagues suggested error. Statistical coincidence. But Katie trusted the data.
Milk is not just nutrition. It is information.
For decades, biology treated breast milk as simple fuel. But if milk were only calories, why would it change depending on the sex of the baby? Katie kept digging.
Across more than 250 mothers and +700 sampling events, the story grew more complex. Younger, first-time mothers produced milk with fewer calories but significantly higher levels of cortisol. The babies who drank it grew faster and were more alert, cautious and anxious.
Milk was shaping behavior.

When a baby nurses, microscopic amounts of saliva flow back into the breast. That saliva carries biological signals about the infant’s immune system. If the baby is getting sick, the mother’s body detects it. Within hours, the milk changes. White blood cells surge. Macrophages multiply. Targeted antibodies appear. When the baby recovers, the milk returns to baseline.
This was not coincidence. It was call and response.
The discoveries kept coming.

Valborgsmässoafton has been celebrated in Sweden since the Middle Ages and, along with Midsummer, is one of two Swedish holidays which still resemble their pre-Christian origins. On Valborg (May 1st) farm animals were let out to graze and so the fires were lit the night before to scare away predators, ward off evil whilst also cleansing the land of the dried and dead of winter. People also fired guns, shook cowbells or yelled and screamed to keep the predators at bay!

New nesting boxes! @Hyperborea8888 got me a nail gun so the process is much cheaper and easier!
If anyone is interested in sponsoring a nesting box for next season please do let me know. I am still just thinking about logistics but sponsoring a box would cost around 15-20 CAD. Essentially I build the box, write your name or draw whatever you want on it, install it in locations that need them and then give you updates on residents over the years.
This is non profit and if people are interested I'll share the full cost breakdown. These boxes in particular are for tree swallows and eastern blue birds but if there is interest I am open to building boxes for a variety of species and maybe even bat houses. I am targeting endangered or in decline species.
