Laika was the first living creature to orbit Earth, becoming a symbol of both space progress and sacrifice during the Space Race.

She was a small stray dog from Moscow, a husky-terrier mix, chosen for her size and calm nature. On November 3, 1957, the USSR launched Sputnik 2 with Laika onboard. The spacecraft wasn't designed to return—her death was expected.

While it was long believed she survived for days, documents released in 2002 revealed she died just hours after launch due to overheating.

As NASA embarks on its Artemis Moon Mission tomorrow for the first time in 54 years, we would like to take the moment to remember Laika the dog, a brave innocent dog who’s experience into space was both heartbreaking and yet inspirational at the same time

Laika is remembered as a space pioneer. Her mission paved the way for future crewed flights, including Yuri Gagarin's in 1961. In 2008, Russia honored her with a monument in Moscow, dedicated to all animals who helped conquer space.

She deserves the respect and honor
