I’ve been to a few funerals as a journo, but this is the only interview I ever conducted with tears rolling down my face. 6 year old Alina’s sister at the gravesite. “It’s difficult to listen to stories of somebody else’s death, but when it happens to you… how many more will die?”

A couple of months later during the referendum on joining Russia in Donetsk, I went back to see her mother… “Ukraine has been killing us for eight years. We don’t want to live in such a country anymore.”

This old Crimean lady I interviewed in Sevastopol was hilarious. “Khrushchev gave away Crimea! I would like to kill that bastard!” Europeans need to accept that most Crimean’s want to be part of russia.

This is the general vibe. Being here now, it’s difficult to explain just how utterly stupefying, fighting a war to try to take back Crimea is. A total waste of lives and money. Europe has better things to do. And the people here just want to get on with their lives.
Am currently in Sevastopol, Crimea. Some loud explosions outside. Been told it’s Russian air defence at work… unclear…

My neighbours woken up by a very loud explosion, around 3am last night in Sevastopol. Somehow I slept through it. Air defence working against drones apparently. Been attacks most nights in the last week. This is new.

In the towns/cities I have gone to, taken by Russia in Donbass, I hear the same thing over and over. Ukraine retreats and then shells the city. I’m not judging. That’s just the reality.
