Celebrating Language and Legacy: InteRussia Fellows at the Kostomarov Forum

The InteRussia fellows in Russian studies took part in the 5th International Kostomarov Forum held at the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute. This year’s theme, “Language and Culture,” pays tribute to the legacy of Vitaly Kostomarov, whose 95th anniversary is being celebrated in 2025.

The Kostomarov Forum is a major international platform dedicated to the study and promotion of the Russian language and culture. Held annually at the Pushkin State Russian Language Institute, the forum brings together scholars, educators, and cultural figures from across the globe.

The forum wasn’t just about theory — our fellows also explored Moscow’s cultural landmarks, including the Pushkin Museum, the House of Russian Émigrés, and the Institute’s own heritage spaces.

A highlight of the week?

Meeting their academic supervisors for the first time — the very scholars who will help them shape and co-author their research articles during the programme.

Do you know why Russia’s smallest coin is called a “kopeck”? 🪙

Well, now our fellows do! On May 29, the participants of the InteRussia fellowship in Russian studies visited the Museum of Moscow to explore the city’s rich past through the large-scale exhibition "History of Moscow."

The display offers a deep dive into the everyday life of Muscovites across the centuries — from the first settlements along the Moscow River in the first millennium BC to the dawn of the Great Patriotic War.

The exhibition features around 2,700 artifacts and artworks from the museum’s collection, including archaeological finds, paintings, rare books, photographs, household objects, and architectural fragments. Through these items, visitors discover how different social groups lived — from medieval craftsmen whose professions now echo in street names, to noble families, merchants, peasants, and residents of 1920s communal apartments.

And the kopeck?

Most historians agree that the name comes from the image once featured on its obverse — Saint George the Victorious slaying a serpent with a spear (kop’ye in Russian). Hence the name kopeck — a small coin with a sharp story behind it.

🎥 Live from Moscow: InteRussia Fellows Commemorate Pushkin

Traditionally on this day, our fellows in Russian studies honor the legendary poet’s legacy by giving voice to his timeless words. Standing before the monument to Pushkin in the heart of Moscow, they read his verses aloud with the same passion and depth that Alexander Pushkin himself poured into them nearly two centuries ago.

We’re sharing these captivating moments with you🔽

Chekhov treated over a thousand patients for free — and wrote masterpieces between house calls

Anton Pavlovich never stopped being a doctor — not even when he was writing The Seagull or planting cherry trees. During his years in Melikhovo, he ran a clinic for local peasants, treated villagers without charge, and still found time to craft stories that would change Russian literature forever.

📌 Last weekend, our Russian language fellows followed his footsteps — quite literally — during a visit to the Chekhov estate in Melikhovo.

At the exhibition “Dear, Most Honorable… Home!”, they explored rare archival treasures and family relics usually hidden from public view. They visited the wing where The Seagull was written 130 years ago, stood in the school where Chekhov taught village children, and watched the fields where he once grew potatoes and ideas side by side.

And yes — they rubbed the shiny noses of Hina and Brom, his legendary bronze dachshunds (because who could resist?).

Time to present: research defense day for our Russian studies fellows

After a month of hard work and countless consultations, our fellows in Russian studies finally presented their research drafts at the Pushkin Institute — the result of weeks of writing under the close guidance of their academic supervisors.

Here’s just a glimpse of what they’ve been working on:

🔍 Teaching Russian as a foreign language to Algerian learners
🔍 Pragmatic adaptation in audiovisual translation from Arabic into Russian (based on the Egyptian film The River of Love)
🔍 Lingua-semiotic features of polycode perfume ads on the Russian Internet
🔍 Cognitive processes behind causal prepositional-case constructions in Russian
🔍 Pictorial imagery in classical Russian literature

And we’ll be honest: even for native speakers, some of these topics sound like brain gymnastics.

Now comes the "easy" part: formatting, footnotes, final polishing — and selecting the right journal for publication!

The InteRussia program in Russian studies is implemented with the support from the Presidential Grants Foundation and in the cadre of New Generation program.

Wrapping Up the InteRussia Fellowship in Russian Studies

The biggest fellowship in InteRussia history — and one of the rare ones fully in Russian. For four weeks, our fellows worked on their research projects under the guidance of the Pushkin Institute’s professors, attended expert sessions and explored Russian culture not from textbooks, but from real life.

Here’s what their Russian journey looked like:

❤️ The fellows took part in the 5th Kostomarov Forum — the largest international forum dedicated to the Russian language

❤️They met with leading experts: Professor Vladimir Karasik, the head of Total Dictation Vladimir Pakhomov, and representatives of the Russkiy Mir Foundation

❤️ Their cultural journey took them from Melikhovo, where Chekhov once lived and wrote, to the Tolstoy estate — and even to a theater production based on Griboedov’s work.

❤️ They explored Moscow's rich history during guided tours, visited Zaryadye Park and the Museum of Moscow

❤️ And of course — work on their research articles, each focusing on one of the three key fields: Russian as a foreign language, literature, or linguistics

Different backgrounds, different stories — but all united by one thing: their shared love for the Russian language. And wherever they go next, a piece of Russian culture will travel with them!

The InteRussia fellowship in Russian studies was organized by ANO «Mezhdunarodniki», the Gorchakov Fund and the Pushkin Institute, within the framework of the New Generation program of Rossotrudnichestvo and with grant support from the Presidential Grants Foundation.
