🔹 در بررسی دین کهن هندوایرانی می‌توان دو طبقه از خدایان را بازسازی کرد: طبقه آسوراها یا اهوراها در پیوند با فرمانروایی، عدالت، نظم و خرد؛ و طبقه دیوها، خدایان طبیعت،‌ نور، پویایی و جنگاوری. نخست، هر دو طبقه توسط اقوام هندوایرانی پرستش می‌شدند؛ ولی بعدتر ارزش‌گذاری اخلاقی آنها در هند و ایران در جهات متضاد پیش رفت.

در فلات ایران، زرتشت یکی از اهوراها—اهورامزدا—را خداوند یکتا و سرچشمه نیکی‌‌ها معرفی کرد. در مقابل، دیوها به عنوان پیروان دروغ محکوم و رد شدند.

به نظر می‌رسد زرتشت به ویژه با آیین‌های مفصل خونریزی و قربانی چهارپایان، منسوب به ایندرا، دیو رعد و جنگ، مخالف بوده است. به باور او، خدایی که برای پیروزی مردم در جنگ، خون قربانی طلب کند؛ سزاوار پرستش نیست؛ وانکه اهریمن است. دو بند زیر را از سنت ایرانی و هندی با هم مقایسه کنید:

ای اهورامزدا، بخشایش تو دور شود از کسانی که مردم را بیراه می‌کنند، با آیین بد در شادی و مستی چهارپایان‌ را نابود می‌کنند، با این آموزش بد که دشمن قوم‌اند. (گاتهای زرتشت، یسنا، ۳۲:۱۲)

ای کاهنان، با این قربانی خوب، رودخانه‌ها را پر کنید. (ریگ‌ودا، ۱:۱۶۲)

The second is the group of Daevas, gods connected with nature, light, dynamism, and warfare. In Persia, Zoroaster elevated one of the Ahuras—Ahura Mazda—as the supreme God and the source of all goodness. The Daevas, by contrast, were condemned as followers of the Druj, the cosmic lie.

Zoroaster seems to have been especially opposed to the elaborate, blood-heavy rituals involving the sacrifice of cattle, which were offered to Indra, the Daeva of thunder and war. For him, any deity who demands bloodshed in exchange for victory in battle is a demonic being unworthy of worship...

مردم شاه را به رسمیت می‌شناسند و نه روشنفکر-شاه را. روشنفکر-شاه تالی‌فاسدی از فیلسوف-شاه افلاطون است که از طریق سنت‌آگوستین به‌شکل روحانی-شاه به ولایت‌مطلقه پاپ در قرون وسطی تبدیل شد.

ملت به‌عنوان بدنه سیاسی نهاد پادشاهی از روشنفکری بیزار است و آن را در شاه خود نمی‌پسندد. مردم از شاه انتظار دارند که در نقش نهادی خود قرار گیرد. نقشی که دموکراسی از تداوم آن بیرون خواهد آمد. از شاه انتظار می‌رود که علاقه‌ خود به روشنفکری را در حوزه عمومی سیاست فروبنهند. چنین علائقی در الیزابت دوم نیز وجود داشت که مادربزرگ وی ملکه مری او را توجیه کرد.

پیشه فلسفیدن نیازمند فراغت ذهنی است که با جایگاه شاه در تضاد است. چه برسد به روشنفکری که برداشت سطح پایین ژورنالیستی از شبه فلسفه‌هاست. شاه البته می‌تواند اندیشمند باشد مثل رضاشاه که فرونِسیس یعنی حکمت عملی داشت. رضاشاه با روشنفکری میانه‌ای نداشت. به برخورد او با میرزاده عشقی بنگرید. علی دشتی می‌گوید رضاشاه ازین اداها بسیار بیزار بود. پس شاه حکمت خود را در عمل باید اثبات کند ولو چون مارکوس اورلیوس رساله‌ای نیز در فلسفه بنویسد.
