Today is a black day in our history. The day we lost our nationhood, our independence. A day when we became prisoners for centuries in the hands of a foreign nation, with a religion, culture, traditions and values alien to us. For almost four centuries, the Turkish invaders did everything to ensure that there were no Hellenes left in the original Hellenic lands. In part they succeeded, look at Anatolia.
That we now exist as Hellenes is a miracle. Hellas was reborn in spite of many circumstances. We should be grateful to God and our valiant ancestors who cast off their shackles.
On this day Byzantium fell. A state that was not allowed to exist in peace, that had been forever fighting invaders from all sides.
And what a symbolic end. The last emperor fell in battle, weapon in hand.

The inscription on the minaret (in Armenian) says that the mosque was built in 1748 by a local architect named Yeranos Mimar.
