Israel and Honduras Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Deepen Defense Cooperation

Minister of Defense Israel Katz today (Sunday, 16 August 2026) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Honduras’ Minister of Defense, Enrique Rodríguez Burchard, to deepen defense cooperation between the State of Israel and the Republic of Honduras.

The signing ceremony took place during an official visit by a senior delegation from Honduras’ Ministry of Defense to Israel, attended by Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD) Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram, the Senior Deputy Head of the Policy and Political-Military Bureau, Israel’s Defense Attaché to Honduras, and additional senior officials from the defense ministries of both countries.

Honduras is an important partner of Israel in Central America, and has been notable over the years for its support of Israel in the international arena. The MOU signed today constitutes a significant milestone in strengthening defense relations between the two countries and establishes a framework for long-term cooperation based on shared interests and values.

During the visit, the Honduran Minister of Defense, the Minister of Internal Security, and the Chief of the Joint Staff of the Honduran Armed Forces held wide-ranging security discussions, during which IMOD Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram presented the Ministry’s strategy.

As part of the dialogue, the parties discussed a range of shared strategic and security issues and examined ways to expand cooperation between the two countries. The Honduran delegation received a briefing on the security and operational challenges Israel has faced in recent years, including key lessons from the multi-front war and from contending with evolving and emerging threats in the region.

The delegation was briefed on the IMOD’s capabilities and activities, as well as key aspects of Israel’s defense and defense-industrial establishment. The parties explored relevant opportunities to expand defense cooperation, including in areas of mutual interest.

The MOU with Honduras joins a series of defense cooperation agreements advanced by the IMOD over the past year with partners around the world, as part of the Ministry’s strategy to expand Israel’s circle of defense partnerships, strengthen strategic ties with friendly nations, and deepen cooperation between Israel’s defense industries and international markets.

The Prime Minister's Office:

The Prime Minister and Board of Peace had deep and constructive discussions. It was agreed to establish two working groups, one on disarmament and demilitarisation of Gaza, which both Israel and the Board of Peace are determined should be prompt and completed before any reconstruction happens in Gaza. A second working group will focus on sanitation, clean water and other public health issues for the people of Gaza and which also impact the people of Israel.

Statement by Prime Minister Netanyahu

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu [translated from Hebrew]:

"My wife Sara and I mourn the deep pain of Tamar and Amos Dadon, whose son Hillel Mordechai, of blessed memory, was brutally murdered last night in Beit Shemesh.

We pray for the well-being of the other child who was injured in the incident and wish him a swift and complete recovery.

Our hearts are with the Dadon family and with the residents of Beit Shemesh in this difficult and painful hour".
Statement by Prime Minister Netanyahu

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu [translated from Hebrew]:

"In a special operation by the IDF and the Mossad, we brought home the remains of Armored Corps fighter, Sgt. First Class Yehuda Yekutiel Katz, of blessed memory, who fell in battle at Sultan Yacoub in June 1982 during the First Lebanon War.

About seven years ago, we returned Sgt. First Class Zachary Baumel, of blessed memory, to burial in Israel. In May 2025 we returned Sgt. First Class Zvi Feldman, of blessed memory. And not for a moment did we cease the work to return Sgt. First Class Yehuda Katz, of blessed memory, who was missing from the same battle.

Throughout the years, I authorized numerous covert operations to locate the missing of Sultan Yacoub. I promised their families that we would never cease working to return them home.

Today all of us, the entire nation of Israel, embrace the Katz family. The dear parents, Sarah and Yosef, of blessed memory, had worked incessantly to locate and return him, and to our sorrow have already passed away. We are returning dear Yehuda to you, the siblings, Avi and Perachia – to you and to the soil of the Land of Israel that he loved so much.

I wish to thank the IDF, the Mossad, the Shin Bet, and the Coordinator for the Hostages and the Missing for many years of efforts and for their determined and courageous action to return Yehuda, of blessed memory, and to return all of our missing and hostages, the living and the fallen alike.

The State of Israel and the Government of Israel under my leadership remain committed to this task, and will continue to carry it out.

As the prophet Jeremiah said:
"And there is hope for your future, says the Lord, and the children shall return to their own border [Jeremiah 31:16]".
