On September 30, 2025, 44-year-old Hariston Jose Urena-Morales was charged with fatally shooting his 40-year-old girlfriend Josefina Tavarez in Wake County,

Tavarez’s 11-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter allegedly witnessed the shooting. In court Wednesday he claimed, "I was forced to do it. She cheated on me.”

He faces life without parole or the death penalty. Officials are working to determine his legal status in the United States.
