Russia is developing weapons to strike Starlink satellites

The Associated Press, citing intelligence services from two NATO countries, reports that Russia is developing so-called “area-effect” weapons that would operate on a shrapnel-like principle, filling Starlink orbits with hundreds of thousands of small metal spheres.

Such a system could potentially disable large numbers of satellites at once, but it also poses a risk to other countries’ orbital constellations and the International Space Station.

According to intelligence assessments, Russia views Starlink as a particularly serious threat. Thousands of low-Earth-orbit satellites provide communications for Ukraine’s military, as well as government institutions and civilians.

The weapon is still in development, and the shrapnel-like spheres may be deployed by formations of small satellites that have not yet been placed into orbit.
