The origin of A Woman Under the Influence (1974) began when director Cassevetes’ wife, actress Gina Rowlands mentioned she wanted to do a play about difficulties faced by contemporary women. When he wrote the play, Rowlands recalled, ‘I couldn’t believe John wrote it. I don’t mean to be sexist because I don’t really believe that women can’t write for men and vice versa. But I really couldn’t believe that a man would understand this particular problem.’”
-
In a 1975 interview with John Cassavetes and #GenaRowlands, the interviewer asks “As you were writing it, did you have Gena in mind and how much of the character that you created was Gena as you were writing it,” and Cassavetes responded “Making movies is part vengeance[...] the truth is Gena told me to write something for her. I think I am an obedient person.”

Lupita Nyong’o’s screen time in 12 Years a Slave is approximately 22 minutes and 30 seconds. Despite this relatively limited time, her performance as Patsey was critically acclaimed and earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
-
Feature film debut for actress #LupitaNyongo. She had just graduated Yale’s School for Drama. She went on to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the film, making her the 16th actor to win an Oscar for their film debut.

Before filming their more brutal scenes together, Lupita Nyong’o and #MichaelFassbender performed a ritual of “making nice.” According to Nyong’o, “We wouldn’t say anything to each other, just a look in the eye and a grasping of hands. Our characters are in such opposition, but we as actors needed each other in order to be able to go the distance.”

Despite being a box office success, this film was not as successful as #MelGibson argued it could have been because Disney pulled it from theaters. On the Joe Rogan Experience, Gibson elaborated: “(Apocalypto) had no stars, it was in another language, and it came out on the same weekend that had a film with Leonardo DiCaprio in it and another film that had Cameron Diaz in it; and those three films came out on the same weekend. And the one with no stars in it and without the language won the weekend- monetarily. It won the box office by a narrow margin. The second week out, Disney pulled the screens... and I thought, ‘That’s funny,’ because (Apocalypto) was another self-funded project. So I guess that’s another agenda, maybe this distribution deal wasn’t as good as the other ones. But ya know, it’s a business.”

A month before filming began, Lisa Marie Presley reached out to director #SofiaCoppola with concerns about the “shockingly vengeful and contemptuous” script. “My father only comes across as a predator and manipulative,” she wrote. “As his daughter, I don’t read this and see any of my father in this character.” She went on to tell Coppola she would speak out against the film after its release. “I will be forced to be in a position where I will have to openly say how I feel about the film and go against you, my mother, and this film publicly.” Unfortunately, Presley died four months later.

Many critics believe that the film is a reimagining of Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire. Coincidentally, #CateBlanchett and #AlecBaldwin have both appeared in productions of the play. Blanchett played Blanche in a 2009 revival by the Sydney Theatre Company, while Baldwin played Stanley in the 1992 Broadway revival. Baldwin also went on to play Stanley in the 1995 film adaptation of the play, alongside #JessicaLange as Blanche.

Daniel Day-Lewis’s method acting for the role famously consisted of him staying in character even when the cameras were not rolling. While many critics applauded his dedication to ‘inhabiting’ the character of Christy Brown, the film crew and technicians were apparently not impressed, feeling they were having to wheel the able-bodied actor around the set and over obstacles unnecessarily.
-
According to the “Making of My Left Foot” segment on the Special Edition DVD, Sir #DanielDayLewis broke two ribs during filming from assuming the hunched-over position in his wheelchair for weeks of filming. He also would refuse to come out of character. On visits to the set canteen, other people would have to help him with food. On one visit from his English agent, Day-Lewis again refused to come out of character as Christy Brown, and his frustrated agent took off.

The band in the movie, Sonic Grave, features songs from the real-life band Kix.
-
Though the band name in the movie is contrived, the actual band music references like “Don’t Close Your Eyes”, and “Blow My Fuse” (sung toward the end by Jake Busey) is word-for-word taken from the 80s rock Band KIX! Credit for this should be verified to exist at the end movie credits.

The story of #GaboureySidibe joining the cast is a tale that could have been written by an old-school Hollywood publicist. At the exclusive Academy Awards party thrown by Madonna and her manager, Guy Oseary, there were Sidibe and Sacha Baron Cohen, one Oscar nominee chatting up another (Sidibe’s nomination is for her performance in Precious (2009); Sacha Baron Cohen’s for writing the screenplay for Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)), about a role in an upcoming movie. “He was telling me how funny he thought I was, and I didn’t believe him,” says Sidibe. “But he asked me if I could do an African accent, so I lied and said yes, and then he asked me who represents me, and I was there with my manager, so I pointed her out and they talked. Two weeks later, my manager emails me - ‘remember that movie you talked to #SachaBaronCohen about at the party?’ Well, I guess he was serious and he really did think I was funny.”
