It was founded in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug in 1975 during the development of oil fields.
👥 Today, about 65,000 people live here, and most residents are connected to Lukoil, the city’s main enterprise.
🧭 Interestingly, Sergey Sobyanin, the future mayor of Moscow, began his political career in Kogalym — he served as head of the administration from 1991 to 1993.

The Polar Urals within Yamal-Nenets is one of the wildest and most scenic corners of Russia.
This northern section of the Ural range stretches for 380 kilometers from the headwaters of the Khugla River to Mount Konstantinov Kamen near the coast of the Kara Sea.
❄️ Spring and summer here are extremely short. The snow begins to melt only in June, and by early September the mountains are once again covered in white.
In summer, the weather is unpredictable: heat can give way to storm winds and hail in a matter of minutes.
It is the only place where the Ural Mountains cross the Arctic Circle. Salekhard, the city closest to the mountains, stands directly on that line.
