Abortion measure fails to make Arizona ballot
Arizona voters will not get a chance to constitutionally protect abortion rights, at least not this year. An initiative drive fell short of needed signatures. That means, absent court intervention,

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, leading a coalition of 20 state attorneys general, filed an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) to grant certiorari in Lowery v. Joffe. The case stems from the settlement of a 2010 class-action lawsuit where plaintiffs alleged that Google’s Street View cars collected millions of consumers’ private data (emails, passwords, usernames, etc.) on their WiFi networks without consumers’ knowledge. The parties settled and created a $13 million cash fund, but harmed consumers received nothing from the fund. Instead, Google would pay almost $4 million to attorneys and more than $9 million to select organizations that have nothing to do with the lawsuit.

Known as the Voters’ Right to Know Act, the proposed ballot measure attempts to require any group or entity that spends over $50,000 in a statewide race (or $25,000 in any other race) to not only disclose their donors, but also the “original source” of any funds received. That applies to both candidate expenditures and ballot measures. While on the surface, that may not concern someone who doesn’t give to election races, this is just the start.

Virtual public meeting slated for ADOT Electric Vehicle Plan
July 14 event to assist in plan development
The EV plan is being developed in response to funding made available through the recently-approved federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) to deploy publicly accessible electric vehicle (EV) chargers along alternative fuel corridors. In Arizona, those routes are currently identified as the state’s interstate highways and, if approved, $76 million would be available to begin implementing this project.

Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich is co-leading a suit in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals against the United States Department of Energy (DOE) in order to protect consumers. The case revolves around DOE’s unlawful 2022 rulemaking called “Energy Conservation Program: Product Classes for Residential Dishwashers, Residential Clothes Washers, and Consumer Clothes Dryers.” The petitioner states are asking the court to vacate this rule because it rolls back 2020 regulations that created a new class for washing machines with shorter wash times and dishwashers with cycle times of 60 minutes or less.

Today's extraordinary New York Times piece on cannabis and psychosis
Three years ago I was practically set on fire for writing in Tell Your Children that cannabis may cause schizophrenia. Today the paper of record reports it as a fact, no qualifications.
I cannot stop thinking about sea change represented by the New York Times’s article today about the mental health dangers of cannabis.
In January 2019, Simon & Schuster published Tell Your Children, my book arguing cannabis use causes psychotic episodes and is likely a significant contributor to schizophrenia (and thus to violence, because untreated psychosis drives violence).
Two three-word sentences summarize the book’s thesis: Cannabis causes psychosis. Psychosis causes violence.
This simple statement stirred a furious media response - not just to the second sentence, but to the first, and not just from cannabis advocates but from nearly the entire non-conservative media.
The Washington Post published an op-ed calling the book “the return of ‘reefer madness.’” And another that criticized it for promoting “myths about marijuana.” And still another that said it was “ramping up the alarmism.” (That particularly risible piece was headlined “I smoked weed with my son. We’re closer now.” Sure you are. You should invest a couple hundred bucks in an eight-ball and try a few bumps with him, you’ll be thick as thieves.)
Again, those three pieces ran in The Washington Post - not openly left-leaning outlets like Rolling Stone or Vox. Reporters at those places engaged in a semi-coordinated campaign to smear the book - and me. (1/5)
