Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) Alert

TOMORROW, 8/14/21 - Grid Maps are expected to be presented Tuesday when the IRC’s two Democrats, two Republicans, and Independent chairperson meets at 8 a.m. September 14.

The public is invited to watch live at www.irc.az.gov .

The commissioners have the option of adopting the Grid Maps during the meeting. Those maps will be followed in a few weeks by Draft Maps and then Final Maps by year-end.

Another IRC activity is to seek citizen feedback, which is one reason the same mapping software tool and database will be available to the public.

A training session on the mapping tool was livestreamed Monday at 10 a.m.. A recording of the training will be posted on the IRC website on Tuesday.

Please be advised that the Independent Redistricting Commission adopted a “grid map” this morning.  Pursuant to the AZ Constitution the “grid map” is the starting point for the IRC mapping process.  The “grid map” only takes into account equal population in what amounts to an artificial starting point that does not relate to any of the other criteria such as, the Voting Rights Act, communities of interest, geographic features, etc.. You should review the “grid map” and discuss with your constituents changes that you want to present to the IRC regarding what is good or bad about the map as it relates to your district.  The IRC will begin to take testimony on the Grid Map starting in the next few days.  Check the IRC schedule of public hearings on the “grid map” on the IRC website at irc.az.gov.  Do not panic, this is just the start of the mapping process that will play out over the next several months.

The Phoenix City Council meets this Wednesday at 2:30 to discuss funding for a powerful Wi-Fi "canopy" that will blanket all neighborhoods for 170 sq. miles in Central Phoenix. Phoenicians will be affected immediately, but this canopy is a test model for ALL Arizona cities, so we all have a stake in this game.

While this is one solution to the very real problem of Arizona families who cannot afford internet connectivity needed for remote education and business, there's a dangerous downside to this solution. Neighborhoods will be exposed 24/7 to wireless radiation that has been proven to cause harm -- with no opting out. The August 13 landmark victory against the FCC proved that the "safety guidelines" for wireless radiation are unscientific and outdated. Fiber optics are a faster, safer, more secure solution, but it won't be considered ... unless people speak out against this dangerous Wi-Fi canopy!
 
What you can do:
 
1. Read and share this letter with your local legislators explaining the dangers we face due to the FCC's untenable "safety guidelines".

2. Sign up to speak at the Phoenix City Council meeting this Wednesday at 2:30, where you can share your comments on Agenda Items 37 and 38, asking the Council to consider the lack of safety guidelines and instead put funds toward WIRED broadband with fiber, which is faster, safer and more secure. 

3. If you can't speak at the meeting, send an email.
