Tales from the paper mill: I just thought of two more.. one story today and one tomorrow. It is common for paper machines to have two or more house cranes that span the width of the building. In a paper mill with two parallel buildings, they decided to run jumper wires between the power rails of the house cranes in different buildings because the power would be out all day in one building. This way they could continue to use the house crane. A great idea, the the best of intentions....

So the E&I guys ran the necessary SO cord between the electrical rails between the buildings.... except they swapped two of the three phase wires. This meant that all motors would run backwards. (foreboding music playing in the background)

So the mechanics were impatiently waiting to get the cranes released to them. As soon as E&I said go, the guys on the north and south cranes both lowered the hoists at nearly the same time. They hit down button and the blocks went up... into the stops and the hoist motors kept lifting until they snapped the wire ropes. within seconds both the north and south cranes had dropped huge blocks onto the machine floor from about 75ft up.

The takeaway here is any time a new three phase power has changed, TRAVEL the crane first, do not operate the hoists first.
