The raven as a symbol in Norse & Germanic mythology is a multifaceted one, embodying the intricate balance between wisdom and war, life and death, thought and memory. It is often associated with a transition from one state to another, life and death, ignorance to knowledge, or from night to day. Odin has two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, which he releases at sunrise for them to fly around the world and gather information.

In the Great War, the static nature of trench warfare and large gatherings of armies, ravens and rats thrived on the immense loss of life on the battlefields. The ravens would gather in large numbers to feed on the fallen, and later the term “Feast for Crows” was coined by soldiers in the trenches.

Franz Schmidt, also known as Meister Franz, born 1554 in Hof, Bavaria, was a German executioner. He started his career in 1573 in his hometown of Hof, and in 1578, moved to Nuremburg, Germany where he continued his job as an executioner for the Free Imperial City of Nuremberg until late 1617, finally retiring after 45 years of work.

Franz wrote a journal, titled “The executioners journal”, where he described his 394 executions he performed, often times describing in detail the grotesque nature of the perpetrators crimes. The journal's very first entry of more than three lines is description of three murders by Kloss Renkhart, including a home invasion where Renkhart killed a miller, raped his widow and her maid, then forced them both to fry and eat an egg on the body of the woman's murdered husband.
