A description of the causes of the race riots in Britain in 1958. This is from Coloured Immigrants in Britain which was commissioned by the Institute of Race Relations after the riots. It mentions the coloured youth prostituting white women in Nottingham as a cause but leaves it out in relation to the Notting Hill area of London where by the mid-50s pimping and drug dealing was dominated by West Indians. The prostitution had a particular ethnic frisson. Numerous accounts talk about the perceived status that came with sleeping with, and prostituting, white women along with a certain attraction amongst white women towards sleeping with West Indian men. In many instances, you had young female sociologists, or trust fund girls sleeping with West Indian street criminals. Unsurprisingly this led to "tensions".
