Art: A leading surgeon has sounded the alarm over urgent children’s operations being cancelled because of coronavirus pressures on hospitals.

It came as Public Health England figures revealed cancer surgery fell by a third during the first wave of coronavirus last year.

The Health Service Journal (HSJ) reported that “dozens and potentially hundreds” of children’s operations had been cancelled during the third wave.

Eric Nicholls, a paediatric surgeon and a council member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, told the HSJ: “We are now hearing that [paediatric] P2 cases [which should be done within a month] are increasingly being cancelled around the country, due to increased and prolonged pressure on hospitals from the coronavirus."
