My Response To The Rise Of Darknet Slop Projects

By Yuzuki
Given the recent discussions around AI and the involvement of AI in the development of community projects within our space, I want to take a little time to provide my own assessment of the situation. This is coming not just from a developer, but from a person who had to wear multiple hats throughout their career and possesses expertise in different industries, fields, and disciplines.
As we all know, there is a surge in projects and services on the internet — including in our own space. These projects are characterized by being simplistic, truncated, insecure, generic, and ephemeral. It's obvious they were developed virtually entirely by AI without much consideration for anything and everything around the software itself, while the "creators" claim to have built these projects themselves. The majority of these projects can be regarded as slop due to the aforementioned characteristics and the neglecting of other very important elements. All of these are low hanging fruit — simple problems that are solved by overly complex and complicated solutions. They aren't elegant; they are unrefined, unpolished, grotesque, and imposing. The elegance lies not with the visual aesthetics or solution itself, but in the simplifying of the underlying complexity and the nature of the intent.
Effective solutions are not solely comprised of a product, but the product is part of the solution, which is intended to solve specified problems. In order to do so, you must first understand the problem you are solving, acquire the necessary expertise, knowledge, and means to solve it, and define the use case accurately by understanding the needs of the end–user. Products may be made by machines, but they are not intended for machines — they are designed and built for humans. This is the precise element which is completely left out of the equation....

I’ve argued against Sotiris (the author) on this more than once, but he is absolutely correct. It has long ago become a loaded term and does our cause no good at all to stick with it knowing what images it conjures up in most peoples’ minds.
