Gold, platinum, precious and semi-precious stones. The leaves are always made of nephrite, the water glasses are made of rock crystal. It looks as if we have a real twig in front of us, placed in a glass of water...
The Chinese were the first to create something like this, and no one knows when. Once, a Chinese bouquet of stone chrysanthemums was brought to Fabergé's workshop for repair. Karl Gustavovich was seized by the desire to replicate this masterpiece. A greenhouse was even built in the Moscow workshop to grow plants that served as 'models' for the jewelled bouquets.
In 1896, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna received a gift from a merchant in Nizhny Novgorod: a bouquet of wild lilies of the valley in a golden basket, with the flowers made of pearls and diamonds and the leaves, just like the real ones, made of nephrite. This work was a copy of an ornament from the Chinese emperor's palace.
From then on, the aristocracy became interested in flowers that never wilt.
A total of 80 stone flowers were made.
