🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s opening remarks at a meeting with Foreign Minister of Indonesia Retno Marsudi

📍 Jakarta, July 12, 2023

💬 I am likewise pleased to be meeting with you today. We are glad to come to Indonesia, to Jakarta and Bali. We would like to take this opportunity to discuss important matters, as well as to devote time to the #ASEAN Member Countries.

We always support this format. We appreciate the efforts of Indonesia, as the chair of this organisation in 2023, to promote the values and principles of ASEAN in the context of developing the Asia-Pacific countries, considering the regional architecture, which, as we all agree, should become ASEAN-centric. This is the best foundation for mutually beneficial and mutually respectful cooperation. Indonesia is committed to these principles. We hope that this will be successfully implemented.

🇷🇺🇮🇩 Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Retno Marsudi hold talks on the sidelines of #ASEAN events

📍 Vientiane, July 25, 2024

🗓 On July 26 and 27, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will attend annual ministerial events held by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (#ASEAN) in Vientiane. He will take part in foreign ministers’ meetings in the Russia-ASEAN format, as well as within the East Asia Summit (#EAS) and the ASEAN Regional Forum (#ARF).

🌏 ASEAN is currently one of the most successful regional organisations which forms the core of the integration processes in the Asia-Pacific Region. The association has created a solid network of interstate institutions involving the leading world powers.

This year, Russia marks 20 years of joining the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (the Bali Treaty). Signed in 1976, it is one of the fundamental documents for ASEAN in terms of ensuring regional peace and stability.

❗️ Russia views ASEAN as one of the key partners in the context of carrying out the initiative to build a Eurasian security architecture as set forth by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

The agenda of the July 26 #RussiaASEAN ministerial meeting covers cooperation matters in all their aspects, including politics, trade and economics.

<…>

📈 In 2023, Russia’s trade with ASEAN countries increased by 14.6 percent to almost $22 billion.

<…>

Russia has coined a range of #EAS initiatives. They include creating a mechanism of pan-regional cooperation on countering epidemics and restoring economic potential by stimulating tourism.

We consider the #ARF as one of the key platforms for discussing topical issues of the regional agenda, developing measures of mutual trust and preventive diplomacy, and boosting non-politicised practical cooperation in security.

During the forum’s 31st session on July 27, we will thoroughly discuss countering new threats and challenges. We will summarise the results of #RussiaIndonesia co-chairmanship in the Russia-ASEAN Forum on the Safe Use of Information and Communication Technologies in 2022-2024.

🇷🇺🇮🇩 President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin held talks at the Kremlin with President-elect and Defence Minister of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, who has come to Russia on a working visit.

💬 Vladimir Putin: We know you as a good friend of our country. You are not only respected in Indonesia as a prominent military leader but also as a political figure. You have held the post of defence minister for many years. I know that you have developed very good relations with your Russian colleagues.

🤝 Russia and Indonesia share a long-standing friendship that began decades ago. Next year, we will mark 75 years of diplomatic relations between our countries.

📈 I would like to note that our trade and economic ties have been developing very well recently. Despite the pandemic and the current developments around Russia, including associated restrictions, our trade has been growing. It has doubled over the past years. This is a very positive trend, which makes us happy. I hope that it will persist.

We also hope that the draft agreement on the EAEU-Indonesia free trade zone, which is ready for signing, will play a positive and substantial role in the development of our trade and economic ties. <...>

We are ready to further increase agricultural deliveries and implement investment projects in energy, transport and infrastructure. It is the responsibility of our intergovernmental commission. <...>.

We also continue to cooperate in the humanitarian sphere. As per tradition, Indonesian students receive education in Russia, including on scholarships funded by the Russian budget, and we are ready to continue doing this. The Russian Centre for Science and Culture is operating in Jakarta. We would like to express our gratitude for supporting its work.

🌐 Last but not least, we also coordinate our positions on the international stage, including and primarily within #ASEAN.
