A source told The Telegraph of a deliberate Iranian attempt to control “the other side of the Red Sea” and create a scenario similar to its grip on the Strait of Hormuz.
Bab el-Mandeb is on the west side of the Arabian Peninsula from Hormuz, and forms a choke point between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
The Houthi rebel group, Tehran’s most capable regional proxy, is laying the groundwork to close the strait, quietly extending its reach to the Horn of Africa, according to sources in Yemen.
The Houthis, in Yemen on the north-eastern coast of the strait, will work with al-Shabab, the Somali militant group, to control both sides of the waterway.
The aim is to inflict more pain on the global economy and increase pressure on Donald Trump.
The source said: “There are a lot of indicators showing co-ordination between the Houthis and al-Shabab. This co-ordination is aimed at totally controlling and blocking the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb when Iran decides in the future.
“The Houthis are transferring drone technology to al-Shabab on behalf of Iran, so the Houthis are becoming the leaders of the region.”
For now, the Houthis are holding back. The source said: “It is not a smart idea for Iran to use all its cards at the same time at the beginning.”
The Houthis have been taking lessons from Iran on how to withstand the kind of decapitation strikes that killed much of Tehran’s leadership in the war, and are naming multiple successors for every senior post and readying for a prolonged fight.
Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, the group’s leader, has designated a family member to replace him if he is killed, part of a system of “shadow leaders”.

Mali Reveals Al-Qaeda Extremists In The Sahel Receive Training, Drones From Ukraine
Malian officials say France is supporting Al-Qaeda groups to destabilize its former colonies in Africa's Sahel region
Malian authorities announced on 9 July that militant groups with links to Al-Qaeda carrying out terror attacks in the country were trained and armed by Ukrainian specialists.
Fousseynou Ouattara, Vice President of the Defense Commission of Mali's Transitional Council, said authorities identified militants who received training in Ukraine to carry out operations using kamikaze drones produced by Kiev.
"These young people are known, we have now added them to our lists, and we have their names," Ouattara said.
The militants fighting the Malian government belong to a Tuareg-led separatist group, the Azawad Liberation Front (ALF), and Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen (JNIM), an extremist group linked to Al-Qaeda.
He added that the militant groups are receiving fighters from Algeria, Mauritania, and Libya, as well as training from members of the French Foreign Legion and Ukrainian instructors.

UK Rules Out VPN Limits — “For Now”
UK won’t ban or age-gate VPNs under the Online Safety Act, minister confirms, as the under-16 social media ban nears.
The British government found a rare setting on its own control panel labeled “leave it alone,” and for once it pressed the button. “Online Safety” Minister Kanishka Narayan went on BBC Breakfast on Wednesday and said the words that privacy people had spent a year begging to hear. “We decided not to limit VPNs.”
That means no age gate on virtual private networks, no ban, and no demand that you hand over a passport before routing your traffic through an encrypted tunnel. The tools that let you step around Britain’s expanding age-check regime stay legal and unrestricted. It counts as a real win, even if the people delivering it would rather you call it something blander.
The plan they walked away from was uglier. As the Online Safety Act’s age-verification machinery switched on and adults across the UK started reaching for VPNs to get out from under it, ministers floated going after the exits too.
If everyone drives around the checkpoint, close the roads. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall promised in June to “come back in July with a further statement.” That statement has landed, and it blinks. Her written note to Parliament was just as flat. The government will not age-gate or ban the software because “VPNs have legitimate privacy and security uses.”
Narayan supplied the human detail. “Whistleblowers told us that VPNs are important for them,” he said.
“Minority groups told us that the ability to use VPNs is a really important way in which they can call out for help when they need it.”
Break the tool to inconvenience a fourteen-year-old sneaking onto TikTok and you break it for everyone who needs it.
The government’s own figures gut the case for a crackdown. A DSIT survey found 26% of 11-to-17-year-olds use a VPN, and they mostly do it for privacy.

Russia Set To Operate 'Commercial Hub' From Syria's Tartous Port
Moscow has maintained its military and commercial presence in Syria despite its previous alliance with the ousted government of Bashar al-Assad
Russia plans to have a commercial logistics hub operating at its naval base in the Syrian port of Tartous by mid-July, Reuters reported on 9 July, citing Syrian officials.
Moscow has access to two berths at the naval base it leases from the Syrian government. It plans to operate the logistics hub from one berth, while maintaining a military presence at the other.
Naval base berths are specialized maritime infrastructures designed to accommodate warships and support vessels. They provide secure moorage and direct access to waterfront services like refueling, maintenance, and utility hookups.
The logistics hub is expected to receive some 250,000 tons of Russian goods for export to Syria and other regional states each month.
The hub will receive various products shipped from Russia's Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, including wheat, grains, animal feed, vegetable oils, timber, steel, clinker, coal, rice, sugar, and mineral oils.
