❗️Trump says Kurdish groups only 'fight when they get paid', rebukes them for refusing to join US-led campaign against Iran US President Donald Trump openly rebuked Kurdish factions from the White House on Monday, accusing the groups of "staling" weapons…
5/18 — IRGC Foils US Arms Shipments To 'Terror Groups' Near Border With Iraqi Kurdistan

President Donald Trump recently complained that Iranian Kurds ‘kept’ US weapons for themselves and did not give them to ‘protesters’

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement on 18 May that it foiled an attempt to smuggle a large shipment of US-made weapons and ammunition into the country.

Counter-revolutionary terror groups based in north Iraq, acting on behalf of the US and Zionist regime, intended to transfer a large shipment of brand-new US weapons and ammunition into the country. They were targeted and struck in Baneh, Kurdistan Province. Large quantities of weapons and ammunition were discovered and confiscated,” the statement said.

The statement added that intelligence efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest all internal collaborators allegedly linked to the armed groups.

The IRGC Hamzeh Sayyed al-Shuhada Headquarters warned “all mercenary elements, their agents, and their leaders that any security-related action will be met with severe force, and … a regret inducing response.

The announcement comes as Washington has been seeking to arm separatist Iranian Kurdish groups in order to destabilize the Islamic Republic. At the start of the war, reports said that US President Donald Trump was seeking to turn Kurdish militias into a “ground force” within Iran.

Trump 'Hit The Breaks' On Israeli Plan For Kurdish Invasion Of Iran: Report

Israeli intelligence reports say Kurdish groups were 'eager' to join the operation with US and Israeli air support

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's inner circle is blaming US President Donald Trump for not going through with an operation to topple the Iranian government with the help of Kurdish separatist groups, Al-Monitor reported on 30 May.

Reports of a plan for the US and Israel to use Kurdish proxies to launch a ground invasion of Iran emerged in the early days of the war they initiated on 28 February.

On 3 March, Fox News reported that thousands of armed Kurdish fighters were preparing to cross from Iraq into Iran under the protection of US and Israeli air cover.

Though Trump initially supported the plan, he told reporters in a news conference five days after the Fox News report that he opposed Kurdish fighters joining the conflict.

"They're willing to go in, but I've told them I don't want them to go in," he said. "The war is complicated enough as it is."

US Treasury Secretary Threatens Oman With Sanctions If It ‘Facilitates Tolls’ For The Strait Of Hormuz

Scott Bessent's warning came after Trump threatened to 'blow up' Oman if it didn't 'behave'

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Thursday threatened to “aggressively” target Oman with sanctions if it was involved in “facilitating tolls” in the Strait of Hormuz, a warning that came after President Trump threatened to “blow up” the country.

The United States Government will not tolerate any effort to impose a tolling system in the Strait of Hormuz,” Bessent wrote on X.

Oman, in particular, should know that the US Treasury will aggressively target any actors involved – directly or indirectly – in facilitating tolls for the Strait and any willing partners will be penalized,” he added.

Bessent also announced more sanctions on Iran targeting the country’s Persian Gulf Transit Authority. “The [US Treasury] continues our Economic Fury campaign against the Iranian regime,” he said in a separate post . “Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) is a joke, and today Treasury has sanctioned it. We have warned any corporate or state entities against paying tolls or hiding them as aid payments.

On Wednesday, President Trump was asked if he would accept a short-term deal that involves Iran and Oman jointly controlling the strait and said, “No, the strait’s got to be opened to everybody, it’s international waters. Nobody’s going to control it… Oman will behave just like everybody else, or we’ll have to blow them up.

Israeli Knesset Advances Death Penalty Bill For Palestinian Prisoners The final two readings to approve the hanging of Palestinian prisoners is set to take place next week The Israeli Knesset’s National Security Committee has advanced a bill to allow the…
5/18 — Israel Expands Death Penalty Law To Include West Bank Palestinians

The law permits Israeli military courts to impose executions on Palestinians as a default penalty, while Israelis are under civilian law

Israeli authorities expanded the use of the death penalty against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank on 17 May, after military commander Avi Bluth signed an order authorizing military courts to carry out executions in so-called “security cases.

The move transfers a law approved by the Knesset on 30 March into the military court system used exclusively against Palestinians living under occupation, deepening the discriminatory apartheid system.

The amendment changes the “Security Instructions Order,” as the Knesset vote alone was not enough to enforce the law in the occupied West Bank, where Palestinians are prosecuted under Israeli military orders rather than Israeli civil law.

Under the new framework, Israeli military courts can sentence Palestinians to death for killing Israelis. Judges may issue life sentences only in exceptional cases, making execution the default punishment in most prosecutions.

One condition for imposing the sentence is that the act was intended to “negate the existence of the State of Israel or the authority of the military commander in the area.”

The language of the law exclusively targets Palestinians resisting Israeli occupation and aggression, while Israeli citizens remain under civilian courts and are excluded from the law...

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir celebrated the measure as a political victory for his Jewish Power party, saying, “We promised and we fulfilled.”
../

Maariv reported in early April that much of the Israeli public’s backlash focused on the law not going far enough, with many demanding it be expanded further.

The report, based on 18,000 posts and 600,000 interactions analyzed by Scooper, found that objections centered on making the law even harsher, not on human rights concerns.

🇮🇱🛢🗺Control of global transit oil communications as a key goal of Israel in the Middle Eastern architecture

Control over major energy transit corridors has long been considered a source of geopolitical influence, and debates about future Middle Eastern energy architecture increasingly focus on how regional powers seek to position themselves within global supply networks

✏️Alexander Svarants
Political scientist, professor, and specialist in Middle Eastern affairs

➡️The Middle East occupies a unique position in the global economy due to its vast hydrocarbon reserves and its role as a crossroads connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. Throughout modern history, control over the production, transportation, and export of oil has remained a central factor in regional and international politics. Because energy resources often lie far from their final markets, transit infrastructure—including pipelines, ports, and maritime chokepoints—has acquired enormous strategic significance. Countries that host or control these routes gain economic advantages, increased political leverage, and greater influence over regional affairs. In this context, discussions about the future of energy transportation in the Gulf increasingly extend beyond oil production itself to questions of logistics, security, and long-term control over export corridors.

Aside from domestic political processes and the costs associated with the threat of Republican failure in the upcoming elections, the United States was losing between $35 and $50 billion per day in the Iranian war

➡️Within these debates, some analysts argue that Israel seeks to expand its role in regional energy networks by promoting alternative transit routes that would reduce dependence on traditional maritime pathways. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world's most important energy chokepoints, carrying a substantial share of global oil exports. Periodic instability in the Gulf has encouraged consideration of alternative export mechanisms, including overland pipeline networks connecting producers to Mediterranean ports. Supporters of this view contend that such projects could strengthen Israel’s economic and strategic position while increasing its importance within regional trade architecture. They also point to the development of offshore energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean as an additional factor encouraging greater Israeli involvement in regional energy planning and infrastructure development.

🟦At the same time, disagreements persist regarding the broader regional consequences of such ambitions and the future relationship between security policy and energy strategy. Ongoing tensions involving Iran, Gulf states, Israel, and the United States continue to shape calculations about energy security and regional stability. While some policymakers emphasize military deterrence and strategic alliances, others advocate diplomatic arrangements aimed at reducing the risks associated with disruptions to critical transit routes. Regardless of which approach ultimately prevails, the competition over energy corridors remains a defining feature of Middle Eastern geopolitics, where the control of transportation networks is often viewed as nearly as important as the possession of the energy resources themselves.
