❗️UN peacekeeping on brink of collapse as funding crises and geopolitical divisions deepen
A new report released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) on 25 May warns that multilateral peacekeeping operations are facing collapse as geopolitical rivalries, political deadlock, and funding crises paralyze the UN and regional bodies. The report said the number of personnel deployed in peace operations fell to 78,633 by the end of 2025 – the lowest level in at least 25 years and nearly half the number recorded in 2016.
SIPRI said UN peacekeeping operations faced a $2bn funding shortfall in 2025 after major donors failed to pay their commitments in full or on time, forcing several missions to slash personnel numbers.
The report also pointed to growing divisions inside the UN Security Council, where veto threats and political pressure obstructed mandate renewals and new deployments. During talks on renewing the mandate of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, the US reportedly pushed to terminate the mission despite repeated Israeli violations of the Lebanon ceasefire agreement, before the Security Council approved a final extension until December 2026.
The report added that regional organizations have failed to fill the growing vacuum left by the retreat of UN-led conflict management. Bodies such as the African Union, ECOWAS, and the OSCE were also hit by funding shortages and political paralysis in files including Sudan and Ukraine.
SIPRI warned that international responses to crises are increasingly shifting toward unilateral and ad hoc military arrangements driven by state interests rather than multilateral frameworks.

VIDEO | 'I wonder if everyone in Lebanon understands that every time they have a delicious bite of seedless watermelon ... they should say thank you [to Israel]'
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee told the people of Lebanon that they should be grateful for Israeli technological and agricultural innovations. Speaking at the Atlas Awards in Tel Aviv, Huckabee listed inventions like cell phones, USB drives, cherry tomatoes, and seedless watermelons, arguing that Lebanese citizens should cross the border to shake hands and thank Israelis rather than refusing to speak to them.
The remarks come amid an intense Israeli bombing campaign in Lebanon that local health officials state has killed over 3,000 people since March.
Huckabee, a staunch Christian Zionist, has previously affirmed his support for the concept of a "Greater Israel," stating it would be fine if Israel took over all of West Asia from the Nile to the Euphrates based on biblical texts.
The ambassador has additionally been a vocal proponent of the ongoing US-backed Israeli war against Iran, which has reached a strategic stalemate following Tehran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Netanyahu Says He Told IDF to ‘Intensify Blows’ Against Hezbollah Amid Surge in Drone Attacks
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he instructed the military to “press the pedal even harder” against Hezbollah, after a US official signaled that Washington would approve a larger operation against the Iran-backed terror group amid a surge in drone attacks.
“We are at war with Hezbollah. Just in recent weeks, our brave fighters have eliminated more than 600 terrorists,” Netanyahu says in a video statement. “But we are not taking our foot off the gas. On the contrary, I have instructed them to press the pedal even harder.”
“We will strike them. Yes, they are attacking us with drones, cyber-enabled drones, and we have a special team working on this — and we will solve that too…But what this requires from us now is to intensify the blows, increase the force. We will strike them decisively,” the premier says.

❗️Pope rejects US-backed 'just war' theory, warns against slipping into violent culture of power
Pope Leo XIV has formally rejected the concept of a "just war," a doctrine heavily advanced by US President Donald Trump’s administration to defend attacks on Iran. Writing in his first papal encyclical today, titled Magnifica Humanitas (Magnificent Humanity), the pontiff warned that humanity is slipping into a violent culture of power where armed conflict is treated as a natural extension of international politics. While acknowledging a strict right to self-defense, the pope declared that the historic just war framework has been consistently abused to rationalize illegitimate violence.
The public rebuke targets the White House and US Vice President JD Vance, who have repeatedly invoked Catholic just war theory to provide a moral defense for the ongoing war with Iran. Pope Leo XIV argued that modern technological changes, including the emergence of automated warfare has fundamentally altered the ethical calculations of combat. The text asserts that lethal, irreversible battlefield choices must never be outsourced to artificial systems or opaque algorithms that dilute human accountability.
The pontiff stressed that modern states possess far more effective diplomatic tools, including dialogue and forgiveness, to resolve international disputes without resorting to the sword. Pope Leo XIV also cautioned that global leaders may cynically weaponize foreign military campaigns as an opportunistic tool to divert public scrutiny away from pressing domestic failures.

❗️France bans Israel's Ben-Gvir over viral abuse of abducted flotilla activists
Paris has officially banned Israel’s ultra-nationalist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering French territory following global outrage over his treatment of foreign activists abducted from a Gaza-bound aid fleet. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced the direct entry ban on Saturday, declaring that France will not tolerate its nationals being threatened, intimidated, or brutalized by a public official.
“As of today, Itamar Ben-Gvir is banned from entering French territory. This decision follows his unspeakable actions toward French and European citizens who were passengers on the Global Sumud Flotilla,” the French foreign minister announced in a post on X.
The decisive diplomatic move follows the viral circulation of a video proudly promoted by Ben-Gvir himself, which shows him waving an Israeli flag, chanting slogans, and openly taunting zip-tied, blindfolded European and international citizens forced to kneel in tightly packed formations at the port of Ashdod after Israeli naval forces pirated the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters.

Trump Says It’s ‘Mandatory’ For Muslim Nations To Join Abraham Accords As Part Of Iran Deal
The president threatened that if the accords aren't expanded, full-scale war will restart 'bigger and stronger than ever before'
President Trump said in a long post on Truth Social on Monday that it should be “mandatory” for Arab and Muslim states to join the Abraham Accords to normalize relations with Israel as part of any Iran deal, and threatened that if the condition isn’t met, full-scale war will resume “bigger and stronger than ever before.”
Insisting on more Muslim countries joining the Abraham Accords as a condition for an Iran deal would likely ensure that an agreement won’t be reached, as the Gulf Arab states that haven’t normalized relations with Israel, which include Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, have long maintained they won’t do so unless the issue of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories is resolved.
After Trump’s post, a Saudi official told CNN that Riyadh won’t normalize with Israel until an “irreversible pathway” toward a Palestinian state is established.
The president said in his post that a potential agreement with Iran will “only be a Great Deal for all or, no Deal at all — Back to the Battlefront and shooting, but bigger and stronger than ever before — And nobody wants that!”
Trump said that during talks on Saturday with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan, he told them that “after all the work done by the United States to try and pull this very complex puzzle together, it should be mandatory that all of these Countries, at a minimum, simultaneously, sign onto the Abraham Accords.”

His office only confirmed the transfer AFTER Hebrew-language media broke the story and forced their hand.
Netanyahu was taken to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center on Monday evening. The nature of the treatment was not disclosed, with aides offering only a vague reference to dental work.
This is the same hospital where he secretly underwent radiation for a malignant prostate tumor last month without informing the public, a fact he only admitted after it leaked.
The pattern is clear: this government lies about his health until it can't.

EXCLUSIVE | Senior Iranian source to The Cradle: Tehran distrusts Washington, warns of new military escalation
A senior Iranian source told The Cradle that Tehran remains deeply skeptical of the ongoing indirect negotiations with Washington, believing any potential agreement may amount only to a “temporary de-escalation” serving US domestic interests, particularly economic pressures and fuel prices, rather than a long-term strategic shift.
Iran does not believe any possible agreement with the United States would represent a final or permanent end to the war, the official said, adding that Tehran believes President Donald Trump is facing major internal pressure tied to the US economy and gasoline prices. Iran also views the current framework of any “limited agreement” as serving Washington more than Iranian interests, which is why it has so far resisted pressure to accept temporary understandings.
Iranian assessments indicate that the United States and Israel may still seek an opportunity to launch a new military strike against Iran later this autumn, even if a final agreement is reached. The official also revealed growing divisions inside Iran, with some political figures supporting a temporary deal to “wait out” the remainder of Trump’s term, while others strongly oppose that approach, calling it a “flawed strategic assumption” given that nearly two years remain before the next US presidential election.
The negotiations are effectively based on a 14-point framework, and reports about such a proposal are “largely accurate,” according to the source. The main disputes center on two issues: Iran’s insistence that any agreement must include a comprehensive end to the war and military escalation across all fronts, especially Lebanon, and the issue of frozen Iranian assets. Netanyahu is reportedly pressuring Trump not to tie any agreement with Iran to an Israeli withdrawal from south Lebanon, while Tehran believes nearly one million people remain displaced inside Lebanon, increasing pressure on Iran not to make concessions related to the Lebanese file.
Tehran also insists that the first step in any understanding with Washington must involve releasing part of Iran’s frozen assets as a practical test of US intentions. Washington recently prevented Qatar from transferring part of those funds to Russia before they were to be moved onward to Iran through Russian channels, according to the official. Iranian officials reportedly view this as further proof that the United States remains unwilling to take meaningful confidence-building measures during the negotiations.

US Backs Israel’s Escalation In Lebanon
Netanyahu announced Israel would intensify its attacks on the country as Iran maintains that a real ceasefire in Lebanon is needed for a deal with the US
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Monday that he ordered the Israeli military to intensify its attacks on Lebanon, which came as US officials speaking to media outlets made clear Washington would support an Israeli escalation despite Iran maintaining that a real ceasefire in Lebanon is required for any deal with the US.
“I have ordered an even greater acceleration of our operations,” Netanyahu said in a video statement. “It is true that they are attacking us with drones, including fiber-optic drones, but we have teams working on countermeasures, and we will solve this issue … We will intensify our blows, increase our firepower, and we will crush them.”
Also on Monday, a US official speaking to Axios reporter Barak Ravid accused Hezbollah of violating the Lebanon ceasefire that was announced last month, but Israel never followed the truce as it continued its occupation and destruction of southern Lebanon.
“Hezbollah has ignored repeated requests to stop firing at Israel, including a recent ultimatum. Israel will never be expected to passively absorb attacks on its forces and civilians. This is not the Biden administration,” the official said, though during the Biden administration, Israel also repeatedly struck Lebanon under a Lebanon ceasefire deal that was signed in November 2024.
Israel violated the November 2024 ceasefire with regular attacks that killed hundreds of Lebanese, and Hezbollah didn’t fire back until March 2nd of this year, an attack the group said was a response to the US-Israeli killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Israel then escalated its invasion and attacks in Lebanon and has killed at least 3,185 in the country since March 2.
