❗️US-backed Lebanese government files unprecedented UN complaint against Iran

In an unprecedented diplomatic move, the US-backed Lebanese government has filed a formal complaint with the United Nations accusing Iran of violating the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, interfering in Lebanon’s internal affairs, and undermining the country’s sovereignty.

The complaint, submitted by Lebanon’s ambassador to the UN, Ahmad Arafa, has been circulated as an official document of both the United Nations Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly. It also disputes Iran’s account of the assassination of Iranian personnel in Beirut, alleging that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants of Lebanon was never informed of or consulted about their transfer to the Ramada Hotel in Raouche, and that some of those assassinated were not officially registered as diplomats.

Lebanon has accused Iranian institutions, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), of carrying out illegal activities in defiance of state decisions and of dragging the country into a devastating war against its will. According to the complaint, these actions led to thousands of deaths and injuries, the displacement of more than one million people, widespread destruction, the occupation of parts of Lebanese territory by Israel, and the establishment of security zones.

— You know, this is the funny thing about Israel.

They’re so giddy about actually being friends with an Arab nation for once, that they literally cannot shut the fuck up for 5 minutes about a top secret meeting between senior officials.

Publication of this meeting severely annoyed the UAE because it undermines its credibility in the Arab world even more, which actually hurts cooperation with Israel in the long run.

If Israel wants to keep countries like the UAE on their side, they have to get rid of this hubris and the need to constantly brag about how good their ties are. Because that position is indefensible to the domestic Arab audience, and the UAE knows it.

Chevron, Qatar's UCC Partner With Syria To Exploit Offshore Oil Block

Syria is open to foreign investment in the oil and gas sector following the rise of former Al-Qaeda chief Ahmad al-Sharaa to power in Damascus

Syria has identified an offshore site for its first deep-water oil and gas exploration project in partnership with US oil major Chevron ‌and Qatar’s UCC Holding, the Syrian Petroleum Company (SPC) announced on 11 May.

Identification of the offshore block will now pave the way for Chevron to finalize contracts with SPC and begin technical operations this summer.

Chevron signed a preliminary agreement in February with SPC ‌and UCC Holding to evaluate offshore oil and gas exploration in Syrian waters.

At the time, Youssef Kabalawi, the CEO of SPC, described the deal as “the most important” offshore energy exploration deal in Syria’s history.

Before the summer, God willing, we will start mobilization and drilling,” Kabalawi stated, while cautioning it could take up to four years to reach the gas reserves.

❗️WFP halves food aid in Syria amid funding shortfall

The World Food Programme (WFP) said on Wednesday that it has been forced to cut emergency food assistance in Syria by half due to a lack of funding, warning that millions of people remain at risk.

The WFP said in a statement that the number of people receiving emergency food aid in Syria dropped from 1.3 million to 650,000 in May, and that its operations have been reduced across all 14 governorates to just seven.

At the same time, 7.2 million Syrians are still considered severely food insecure, including 1.6 million facing extreme hunger, according to the agency.

“The reduction in WFP’s assistance is driven solely by funding constraints, not by a decrease in needs,” WFP country director in Syria Marianne Ward said in the statement.

The agency also suspended a bread subsidy program that had supported over 300 bakeries with fortified wheat flour.

❗️OPEC cuts 2026 oil demand forecast amid war on Iran impact

OPEC on Wednesday revised down its outlook for global oil demand growth in 2026, aligning with other forecasters, including the International Energy Agency, which have lowered expectations amid the impact of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Despite the downgrade, OPEC projected a less severe reduction in demand than the IEA, which earlier in the day raised its estimate for the decline in oil consumption this year. The group also said it expects demand to recover later on and increased its forecast for growth in 2027.

According to OPEC, global oil demand is now expected to increase by 1.17 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2026, compared with its previous forecast of 1.38 million bpd. For 2027, the organization raised its demand growth estimate to 1.54 million bpd, an increase of 200,000 bpd from its earlier projection.

❗️UN may renew Cyprus peace push before Guterres’s term ends

The United Nations is likely to launch a renewed effort to resolve the decades-old division of Cyprus before Secretary-General António Guterres’s term ends later this year, according to Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides.

Christodoulides, who represents the Greek Cypriot side in negotiations with Turkish Cypriots, made the remarks during an interview with Cyprus’s Alpha TV on Tuesday night. Christodoulides said he had been informed that Guterres was encouraged by discussions he held with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in March. “We might be close to developments, which may lead to a peace plan,” the Cypriot president said.

Turkish Cypriots, whose self-declared state is recognized only by Ankara, accepted the proposal.

🌏💬Sergey Karaganov: “We Need to Formulate a New Ideology for Ourselves and for the World, Rooted in Serving the Individual”

The debate surrounding BRICS, Eurasian integration, and the decline of Western dominance reflects a broader transformation of the global political order

🎤Yuliya Novitskaya
Writer, journalist-interviewer, correspondent for New Eastern Outlook

➡️According to Sergey Karaganov, the current international system is undergoing a prolonged period of structural disintegration as Western-centered institutions lose their monopoly over global governance. In his view, organizations such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation are gradually becoming foundations of a future multipolar order built on cultural diversity, mutual respect, and the rejection of political diktat. Karaganov argues that the expansion of BRICS should not be viewed as a weakness caused by internal diversity, but rather as evidence of the bloc’s flexibility and global attractiveness. He believes the decline of Western dominance has accelerated the emergence of alternative political and economic centers, forcing states across Eurasia, Africa, and the Global South to seek new models of cooperation beyond traditional Atlantic institutions.

Naturally, we need to deter them, to shield ourselves from the contagion, while preserving within ourselves the good that European culture has given us. But the future, of course, lies in the East

➡️Karaganov also emphasized that Russia’s long-term strategic future lies in Eurasia rather than Europe. He described Russia as a historically Eurasian civilization shaped not only by European influence, but also by Byzantine, Islamic, Buddhist, and Mongol political and cultural traditions. In this context, he defended the concept of a Greater Eurasian Partnership as a framework designed to balance the interests of major regional powers including China, India, Türkiye, Iran, and Russia itself. While acknowledging China’s growing power, Karaganov argued that balanced regional structures are necessary to prevent geopolitical fears and future instability. He also stressed the importance of Russia’s renewed engagement with Africa, describing the continent as one of the future centers of global development and arguing that Moscow must expand its economic role there beyond military and security cooperation.

🟦A central theme of the discussion was Karaganov’s call for a new global ideology rooted in “serving the individual” rather than preserving outdated geopolitical hierarchies. He argued that future political and economic systems must focus on supporting free and culturally diverse human development while avoiding ideological coercion. At the same time, he warned that the transition toward a new world order will likely be accompanied by prolonged geopolitical confrontation and instability, which he previously described as a potential “century of wars.” Despite these risks, Karaganov maintained that Eurasian integration, alternative financial systems, and broader cooperation among non-Western states could eventually produce a more balanced international system capable of replacing the declining structures of the post-Cold War era.

📰 Israeli ministers and MPs led mass incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque on Thursday, as one lawmaker declared it was time to demolish the site and build a Jewish temple in its place.

The raids came as Israeli forces violently blocked Palestinian worshippers from accessing the Jerusalem holy site while facilitating large-scale settler raids ahead of the annual “Flag March” through the Old City.

The Old City, in occupied East Jerusalem, was placed under near-total lockdown to accommodate the marches and incursions, with Palestinian-owned shops forced to shut and residents ordered indoors.

“Security barriers and restrictions are tighter than ever before,” an employee of the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf, which administers Al-Aqsa Mosque, told Middle East Eye on condition of anonymity.

US Intel Agencies Say Iran Retains 'Majority' Of Pre-War Missile Stock: Report

Donald Trump and the US Department of War have repeatedly claimed that airstrikes have ‘decimated’ Tehran’s capabilities

US intelligence has estimated that the Islamic Republic retains significant missile capabilities despite Washington’s claims of a “shattered” Iranian military, the New York Times (NYT) reported on 12 May.

The report states that there are “Classified assessments from early this month that show Iran has regained access to most of its missile sites, launchers and underground facilities.

Iran has restored operational access to 30 of the 33 missile sites it maintains along the Strait of Hormuz, which could threaten American warships and oil tankers,” it added.

Informed sources told NYT that “the Iranians can use mobile launchers that are inside the sites to move missiles to other locations,” adding that in certain cases they “can launch missiles directly from launchpads that are part of the facilities.

Only three of the missile sites near Hormuz are “totally inaccessible.

Israel's Ruling Coalition Preps Bill To Dissolve Knesset As Frustration Mounts Over Haredi Draft Crisis

Several ultra-Orthodox parties are pushing for Knesset dissolution and early elections over the government’s failure to secure draft exemptions for yeshiva students

Israel’s ruling coalition has decided to prepare its own bill to dissolve the Knesset, Hebrew media outlets reported on 13 May – after ultra-Orthodox Israeli parties called for its dissolution and urged early elections.

Sources told Ynet that the “coalition is expected to submit a bill to dissolve the Knesset that could come up for a preliminary vote as early as next Wednesday.

The Times of Israel reported that the ruling coalition will submit its own bill to dissolve the Knesset in order to “control both the legislative process and the timing of the vote.

If a vote passes to dissolve the Knesset, elections must be held within five months of the vote. The ultra-Orthodox parties are reportedly pushing for elections to take place in September. Currently, elections are scheduled for 27 October.

No date to dissolve the Knesset has been set in the bill. Factions are expected to coordinate with one another on the matter.
