Congressman Presses Elon Musk To Provide Spacex Satellite Services For US Defense Forces In Taiwan, Report Says

- A Congressman is urging Elon Musk to give SpaceX Starshield access to US forces in Taiwan.

- Refusal could breach SpaceX's contractual obligations with the US government, Forbes reported.

Elon Musk is facing pressure to provide SpaceX's Starshield satellite network to US defense personnel in Taiwan, according to Forbes.

Wisconsin GOP Rep. Mike Gallagher, in a letter to Musk first obtained by the outlet, reiterated to the businessman that SpaceX had a contractual commitment to give the US Defense Department the ability to use its satellite communications service.

It is unclear if other members of Congress also signed on to the letter, which was dated February 24, Forbes reported. However, the outlet described a "group of US lawmakers" were involved in the calls for Musk to provide satellite access to US defense forces in Taiwan. The Wall Street Journal, which later reported on the letter, only noted Gallagher's involvement in writing the correspondence.

In the letter, Gallagher, the chair of the House select committee on the Chinese Communist Party, said the DoD is appropriating "tens of millions of dollars" for Starshield, which was designed for government use and utilizes satellites in low-Earth orbit to transmit imagery to military agencies.

Musk's significant business ties in China may be a factor in his response.

Authorities in Washington, D.C., confirmed that a man wearing military fatigues set himself on fire Sunday in front of the Israeli Embassy.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force confirmed with military news site Task and Purpose that the man was an active-duty airman with the U.S. Air Force...

....Officials said that a video online, which shows an individual setting himself on fire as he shouts “Free Palestine,” appeared to be posted by the man who was taken to the hospital, The Washington Post reported.

US Reverses Course on West Bank Settlements

The planned expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank is “inconsistent” with international law, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, potentially signaling a policy shift for Washington.

Speaking to the media in Buenos Aires on Friday, the top US diplomat addressed reports that Tel Aviv intends to construct thousands of new settlement units across the West Bank, saying the White House was “disappointed” by the news.

“Our administration maintains a firm opposition to settlement expansion, and in our judgment this only weakens, doesn’t strengthen Israel’s security,” Blinken said, adding that the settlements were “inconsistent with international law“ and “counterproductive to reaching enduring peace.”

The comments appeared to mark a return to previous US policy, which for decades regarded Israel’s racially exclusive colonies as a clear violation of international law. The Trump administration broke with that position in late 2019, when then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared that Washington no longer viewed the settlements as “inconsistent with international law.”

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby later reiterated Blinken’s stance, saying US policy “has been consistent over a range of Republican and Democratic administrations – if there’s an administration that is being inconsistent, it was the previous one.”

Palestinian activists and other critics of settlement expansion frequently cite the Fourth Geneva Convention, which states that an occupying power “may not forcibly deport protected persons, or deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into occupied territory.”

A long line of United Nations resolutions have concluded much the same, with the Security Council previously finding the settlements were in “flagrant violation” of basic humanitarian law and had “no legal validity.” The UNSC has urged Israel to halt construction and to fulfill its obligations under the Geneva Conventions.

Sweden Clears Final Hurdle to Join NATO as Hungary Approves Accession

Hungary's parliament approved Sweden's NATO accession on Monday (Feb 26), clearing the last hurdle before the historic step by the Nordic country whose neutrality lasted through two world wars and the simmering conflict of the Cold War.

Hungary's vote ended months of delays to complete Sweden's security policy shift and followed a visit by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Friday (Feb 23) during which the two countries signed an arms deal.

"Today is a historic day," Kristersson said on X. "Sweden stands ready to shoulder its responsibility for Euro-Atlantic security."

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government has faced pressure from NATO allies to fall in line and seal Sweden's accession to the alliance.

Ex-Fox News host said that the Biden administration had illegally spied on his text messages and leaked them to the media in order to prevent him from interviewing Putin three years ago. US Sanctions Threat Hinders Russia-Turkey Trade

The Russian president has previously said that Turkiye has been Moscow's most reliable energy partner since the start of the Ukraine war

The US has put Russian-Turkish trade on ice by threatening to impose sanctions on financial firms doing business with Moscow, thereby disrupting or slowing down money transfers for Turkish oil imports and exports, Reuters reported on 19 February.

Citing seven unnamed sources familiar with the matter, Reuters said that US threats made in December did not specifically target the energy sector but have made payments for Russian crude by Turkiye and Russian payments for broader Turkish exports more difficult...

Reuters stated the US hopes to reduce Russia’s trade revenues and hinder its war effort in Ukraine, but without affecting Russian oil flow into the global market to prevent a jump in US gasoline prices.

Turkiye is not alone in facing the problem of US sanctions when wanting to do business with Russia; the UAE, China, and India are also facing complications, according to oil traders.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explained that if Tel Aviv agrees to a new hostage deal with Hamas, it will only “delay” the Israeli attack on Rafah. International aid organizations have warned that an attack on the city of 1.5 million will be devastating to the civilian population of Gaza.

On Friday, the US, Egypt, and Qatar presented a new hostage deal that would see the release of 40 Israeli captives in exchange for a six-week pause in fighting.
