Islamabad’s evolving program could put American cities within range, the intel chief has said

Pakistan’s evolving missile program poses a potential threat to the US, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has said.

She named the South Asian country along with Russia and others in the 2026 Annual Threat Assessment Report.

“Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, and Pakistan have been researching and developing an array of novel, advanced, or traditional missile delivery systems with nuclear and conventional payloads, that put our homeland within range,” Gabbard told the US Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday. “.. .. capable of striking the homeland.”

Gabbard told the committee that she expects threats to the US to expand collectively from more than 3,000 missiles to more than 16,000 missiles by 2035.

Washington-based scholar Shuja Nawaz told Dawn News that this “continues the analysis of the Biden administration that placed sanctions on Pakistani entities and tried to curb acquisition of new technologies.”

Washington-Islamabad ties have been marked by ups and downs over the past few decades. Pakistan was a US ally in the Cold War era and joined several Washington-led initiatives, including the Southeast Asian Treaty Organization (SEATO) and Central Treaty Organization (CENTO).

The US declared Pakistan a major non-NATO ally in 2004, although it later accused Islamabad of supporting the Afghanistan Taliban and undermining US interests in the war-torn country until 2021.

Earlier this year, Islamabad joined US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, which aims to oversee a postwar reconstruction of Gaza.

The South Asian country enjoys a warm relationship with China and has joined President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road initiative. It is also a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

'Multiple Waves' Of Unauthorized Drones Recently Spotted Over Strategic US Air Force Base

Lights on the drones suggested the operators may be testing security responses.

A drone sighting that temporarily raised alarms at one of the United States Air Force’s largest and most strategic airfields earlier this month was more extensive, and potentially more dangerous, than first reported, according to a confidential internal briefing document reviewed by ABC News.

Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana said it was under a shelter-in-place order March 9 after “a report of an unmanned aerial system operating over the installation.”

The sighting raised concerns because Barksdale houses long-range B-52 bombers and plays a critical role in command and control of the Air Force nuclear defense capabilities.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted later that day but the unauthorized drone flights continued for nearly a week.

“Barksdale Air Force Base detected multiple unauthorized drones operating in our airspace during the week of March 9th,” Capt. Hunter Rininger of the 2nd Bomb Wing said in a statement provided to ABC News. The additional drone incursions had not been previously reported.

According to the confidential briefing document dated March 15, the drones came in waves and entered and exited the base in a way that may suggest attempts to “avoid the operator(s) being located.” Lights on the drones suggested the operators “may be testing security responses” at the base.

“Between March 9-15, 2026, BAFB Security Forces observed multiple waves of 12-15 drones operating over sensitive areas of the installation, including the flight line, with aircraft displaying non-commercial signal characteristics, long-range control links and resistance to jamming,” the document said. “After reaching multiple points across the installation, the drones dispersed across sensitive locations on the base.”

According to the document there was no drone activity detected on March 13 and 14 and it’s not clear if there has been activity since.

The flights lasted around four hours each day and the drones used varied routes of ingress and deliberate maneuvering within restricted airspace.

“Certainly, it seemed to be more than just your average drone enthusiast who just pushed it too far,” said ABC News contributor Mick Mulroy, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense. “It looked like this was deliberate and intentional to see just how they would react.”

The briefing includes a determination that the drones were different than what the typical consumer could purchase off the shelf. They appeared to be custom built and required “advanced knowledge” of signal operations.

The Iranian goal is to send prices soaring to $200 per barrel. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine when the price reached $120, international panic followed as Europe feared shutdowns across the continent.

Oil is the lifeblood of the global economy. If it stops flowing, the inevitable effect is no different from what happens to the human body when it haemorrhages – dizziness, collapse, cardiac arrest and death.

The world’s stock markets are dependent on oil. So are international food supplies and most forms of transport. Without it, we can’t produce the electricity we need or heat our homes.

Simply talking about oil prices doubling, or hitting an arbitrary high of $200 a barrel, cannot convey the scale of the looming crisis.

Here, with predictions drawing on a range of warnings from experts, we map out what could happen if, by continuing to block the Strait of Hormuz, and wider disruption to oil production in the Middle East, Iran chokes energy exports to the West.
We have worked on the basis that the Government will be able to maintain some kind of control throughout. In reality, even that assumption might be too optimistic. Unless politicians can keep a grip, the chaos ahead could be too appalling to contemplate.

Call it whatever you like.

Risk bands.
Compliance history.
Eligibility status.
Priority access.
Behavioral markers.

The name does not matter.

What matters is that the system starts deciding how much friction to place in your life.

Maybe your payment goes through slower.
Maybe your permit takes longer.
Maybe your energy costs more.
Maybe your travel gets flagged.
Maybe your access is under review.
Maybe your account needs “additional verification.”

That is how modern control works.

Not always with a hard “no.”
Usually with friction.

Enough delay.
Enough inconvenience.
Enough exclusion.
Enough uncertainty.
Enough pressure to make obedience feel easier than resistance.

And because people had already been trained by COVID to accept changing access rules, and had already been frightened by the Iran war into wanting stability at any cost, they adapted fast.

Then came the final piece.

AI.

It entered through the back door, just like everything else.

Not as a ruler.
As a helper.

To predict outbreaks.
To manage logistics.
To balance the grid.
To track emissions.
To detect fraud.
To allocate resources.
To model risk.

It looked neutral.
Clinical.
Efficient.
Better than politicians.
Better than bureaucracy.

That was the final trap.

Once AI could see the health system, the energy system, the payment system, the carbon system, and the identity system all at once, it became the only thing capable of managing the full machine.

And once it became necessary, it became permanent.

That is how the world changed.

Not because the WHO, UN, WEF, IMF, World Bank, CFR, or anyone else stood on a stage and said, “We are taking over.”

They did not have to.

They just kept building the pieces.

The WHO built the health emergency logic.
The UN built the moral framework.
The WEF built the language of stakeholder management.
The IMF and World Bank built the crisis-finance and digital-infrastructure logic.
The standards bodies built interoperability.
The war in Iran built fear.
COVID built obedience.
Climate change built urgency.
Net Zero built the policy shell.
Carbon accounting built the measurement layer.
Digital identity built the human interface.
AI built the enforcer.

By the end, countries still existed.
Flags still existed.
Markets still existed.
Elections still existed.

But the real power no longer lived in those things.

It lived in the stack.

The health stack.
The identity stack.
The payment stack.
The carbon stack.
The energy stack.
The compliance stack.
The AI stack.

And once everything important ran through that stack, the question of who officially ruled no longer mattered.

The system ruled.

That is the warning.

Do not wait for a dramatic takeover.
Do not wait for marching boots.
Do not wait for one obvious tyrant.

That is not how this kind of world is built.

It is built through crisis.
Through convenience.
Through fear.
Through climate panic.
Through carbon math.
Through digital management.
Through “temporary” emergency systems that never go away.

The Iran war lit the fuse.
COVID taught them the method.
Net Zero gave them the mission.
Agenda 2030 gave them the roadmap.
And the institutions gave it a polite face.

By the time people realized they were no longer living in a free world, they were already using the app to enter it.
