Israel Confirms ‘Direct Normalization Talks’ With Syria

The revelation comes as Hanegbi says Syria and Lebanon are candidates for inclusion in the Abraham Accords, with Tel Aviv deepening contacts with Damascus

National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi confirmed on 24 June that Israel is engaged in direct, daily communication with Syria’s interim authorities, with the aim of exploring normalization.

Speaking to Israel Hayom, Hanegbi said he personally leads the talks “at all levels” with political officials in Damascus.

His remarks, first made during a classified Knesset session on 23 June, mark the most explicit Israeli admission to date of negotiations with the transitional Syrian government.

Hanegbi said Syria and Lebanon are being considered for future inclusion in the so-called Abraham Accords, and that any Israeli withdrawal from occupied buffer zones would be subject to final arrangements. He clarified, however, that Tel Aviv “will not withdraw from the Syrian Hermon.”

The comments follow a series of indirect contacts and reports of “face-to-face” meetings between Syrian and Israeli officials, aimed at preventing confrontation and formalizing ties under the leadership of Syrian de facto President Ahmad al-Sharaa – formerly known as Al-Qaeda commander Abu Mohammad al-Julani.

The Israeli army's Arabic spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, issued an evacuation order to all residents in Gaza on 13 June via X, declaring vast areas of the strip as “dangerous combat zones” that the citizens should stay away from.

In the map he shared, the red areas shown are designated as “dangerous combat zones,” and cover the majority of the Gaza Strip, forming a wide horizontal band that spans almost the entire region from north to south, leaving only a narrow strip along the coastline where people can traverse.

The Gaza Strip suffered a total collapse of its communications infrastructure one day prior to the evacuation warning, effectively cutting it off from the outside world.

UN spokesperson Farhan Haq described the situation as “a complete collapse,” not a routine outage, with mobile networks barely functioning.

The blackout was attributed to heavy Israeli military activity, which severed Gaza’s last remaining fiber cable route in the central and southern areas.

The Palestinian Telecommunications Regulatory Authority accused Israel of deliberately targeting telecom infrastructure, stating that repeated attempts to restore connectivity had failed.

On Friday morning, Tel Aviv deployed heavy contingents of Israeli forces to multiple areas of the occupied West Bank, as confirmed by Israeli media, including Israel Hayom and Anadolu Agency.

The offensive has featured “extensive raids,” particularly around Nablus, and comes alongside the ongoing war on Gaza and concurrent large-scale airstrikes on Iran, prompting concerns the region may be slipping into a broader, multi-front confrontation.

On the same day, Israeli forces stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque after dawn prayers, forcibly removing worshippers and sealing all gates, completely blocking access for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Waqf officials warn that the move is part of a long-standing effort to divide the mosque’s space and assert Israeli control over the compound.

With no clear timeline for reopening and settler incursions increasing, critics say Israel is exploiting regional conflict to cement new restrictions on the holy site.
