Judge Freezes Firing of Intel Chief Who's Investigating Netanyahu's Aides

A Supreme Court judge on Friday issued an injunction freezing the dismissal of the Shin Bet director until a hearing can be held on the matter, hours after Israel's cabinet voted unanimously to dismiss him.

Why it matters: The vote to fire Ronen Bar, the head of Israel's most powerful security agency, was unprecedented. No government in Israel's history has ever before sought to remove someone from the position.

- The Cabinet's dismissal decision dramatically escalates the domestic political and constitutional crises in Israel.
- With the court's injunction, Netanyahu will face a decision on whether to abide by the ruling. Many of his critics believe he could refuse to do it.

The big picture: The Cabinet decision comes as the agency investigates two of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's advisers for allegedly receiving payments from Qatar during the Israel-Hamas war.

- Netanyahu's long-expected move to remove Bar with Cabinet approval raised concerns among his political foes that he would replace the ousted intel chief with a loyalist and politicize the organization, potentially weaponizing it against his political opponents and critics, or to crack down on the protest movement against him.

- The Cabinet decision was made against the legal opinion of the attorney general. Opposition parties said they would appeal to Israel's Supreme Court to halt and overturn the decision.

White House: Trump ‘Fully Supports’ Israel’s Gaza Slaughter

The State Department said the US 'stands with Israel in every circumstance'

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Thursday that President Trump “fully supports” Israel’s renewed massive bombing campaign in Gaza, which has killed at least 200 children since Tuesday.

“The president made it very clear to Hamas that if they did not release all of the hostages, there would be all hell to pay. Unfortunately, Hamas chose to play games in the media with lives,” Leavitt told reporters.

The US and Israel are blaming Hamas for the lack of a continued ceasefire and hostage releases. But it was Israel that repeatedly violated the deal signed in January, which would have led to the release of all Israeli captives, a permanent truce, and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Leavitt said that President Trump “fully supports Israel and the IDF and the actions that they’ve taken in recent days.”

On Wednesday, the State Department also affirmed the administration’s unconditional support for Israel. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said the US will “stand with Israel in every circumstance.”

Palestinian Political Prisoner Given Green Light To Challenge Trump's Deportation Efforts

Mahmoud Khalil, a legal resident of the US, was arrested in New York and moved to a detention facility in Louisiana due to his role as a mediator during last year's anti-genocide campus protests

A federal court in Manhattan on 19 March rejected a claim by the White House to dismiss Palestinian political prisoner Mahmoud Khalil’s legal challenge against his detention and deportation.

“These are serious allegations and arguments that, no doubt, warrant careful review by a court of law; the fundamental constitutional principle that all persons in the United States are entitled to due process of law demands no less,” Judge Jesse Furman wrote in his ruling, describing Khalil’s ordeal as an “exceptional case.”

Furman stressed the need for a thorough legal review to determine whether the White House acted “unlawfully or exercised its authority in an arbitrary and discriminatory manner” and said that his previous order barring the government from deporting Khalil must remain in place while the case is under review.

He also ruled that the legal case must be transferred to New Jersey, where Khalil was held when the challenge was filed, instead of Louisiana, where he is currently detained at an immigration enforcement facility.

“My name is Mahmoud Khalil, and I am a political prisoner. I am writing to you from a detention facility in Louisiana, where I wake to cold mornings and spend long days bearing witness to the quiet injustices underway against a great many people precluded from the protections of the law,” the Palestinian green card holder says in a public letter issued on Tuesday.

Yesterday: Hamas / Qassam Brigades Targets Tel Aviv With First Rocket Barrage In Months

The attack was announced as a response to the massacres Israel has committed since it renewed its war on Gaza two days ago

Hamas’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, launched a barrage of rockets toward Tel Aviv on 20 March for the first time in months, coming after over 700 Palestinians were killed by Israel within a period of two days.

“The Qassam Brigades bombarded Tel Aviv with a barrage of rockets in response to the Zionist massacres against civilians,” the resistance movement announced via its Telegram channel.

The Israeli army said one rocket was intercepted, and two others “fell in open areas.”

The last time the Qassam Brigades or other resistance groups launched rockets at Israel was in early January, weeks before the ceasefire agreement. Despite over a year of brutal airstrikes and ground operations, Israeli forces failed to eradicate the resistance’s military capabilities.

The new rocket barrage follows several massacres committed by Israel in Gaza.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a message to Syrian transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa, offering “support” to help achieve stability in Syria and calling for “practical cooperation” between the two countries, Moscow announced on 20 March.

“Putin sent a letter to Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, expressing his support for efforts to quickly stabilize the situation in the country in the interests of ensuring its sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

“Russia affirmed its continued readiness to develop practical cooperation with the Syrian leadership across the full range of issues on the bilateral agenda, in order to strengthen traditionally friendly Russian–Syrian relations,” Peskov added.

Putin had spoken to Sharaa on the phone in mid-February, offering his nation's support in safeguarding Syria's “sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
