A Boeing E-6B Mercury, known as U.S. Navy’s “doomsday plane” vanished from public tracking while on a transatlantic mission. The plane departed from Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland and followed a standard route over the Chesapeake Bay and past the Norfolk naval area. About 60 miles east of the Virginia Capes, its public transponder went silent, a common occurrence for classified operations.

This aircraft, one of just 16 in its class, serves as a flying command-and-control center: a survivable airborne hub for top U.S. leadership, the President, Secretary of Defense, and other senior officials, in case of a nuclear war or national emergency. On such “TACAMO” (Take Charge and Move Out) missions, the E-6B switches off its transponder, deploys trailing-wire antennas and flies racetrack-style patterns over the ocean to transmit secure communications to submarines and command elements.
