🇮🇱 📝 Israeli Army Radio reported that in the years leading to October 7, Hamas gathered sensitive intelligence on the Merkava Mark 4 tank over many many years by monitoring the social-media activity of thousands of Israeli soldiers. IDF personnel had posted tens of thousands of photos, videos, and training material from bases, especially the Shizafon armored training base, which allowed Hamas to slowly piece together technical details, vulnerabilities, and even the function of a “secret button” that when pressed could temporarily disable the tank

🇵🇸 With this knowledge, Hamas created life-size models of tanks, developed simulation software, and trained a select elite "Tank Force" who’s purpose was to capture and operate real Merkava 4 tanks. During the October 7 attack, the elite force succeeded in disabling and even destroying multiple Merkava 4s in the Gaza envelope, but their plan to capture any Merkava and drive them back into Gaza to be used in combat against the IDF did not succeed. The only Israeli vehicles successfully captured and driven back to Gaza were a few lightly armored vehicles like Humvees and at least one military truck converted into a mobile missile launcher

🗺️ A later Israeli investigation found that Hamas had not only detailed knowledge of tank systems, but also detailed settlement layouts and security weak points, much of it traced back to poor OPSEC and social media posts of soldiers.

How all of this happened right under the nose of Israeli intelligence agencies is beyond me

Israeli media: A father who visited his daughter at the military base on the Gaza border was shocked when he discovered that "nothing had changed" as he stormed the base and filmed a video, "No guards, nothing."

The Israeli army spokesperson responded to this incident by saying, "The absence of a guard at the moment the video was filmed is a serious incident that will be reviewed, investigated, and addressed."
