The burden of proof that AI products have new/original ideas is on the AI companies. I would argue against any such claim on the basis of logical consistency. Originality of ideas presupposes already ‘having ideas’, but a system/program/algorithm does not have ideas, does not conceive of ideas, does not imagine or think and has no self-conception; it merely processes bits of information that are meaningful only to us, conscious beings. Any AI output is not meaningful in itself but must be interpreted, and it is our interpretations that give it meaning. Our interpretations of the same output can themselves be more or less consistent, and we should not misrepresent our inconsistencies as new ideas (nonsense is always a non-idea, a synthetic nothing).
