The Indian government (MeitY) has sent notices to Telegram and Signal regarding their existing username features, following a similar notice to WhatsApp. Officials are concerned that usernames could complicate user identification and increase risks of fraud, impersonation, and scams during investigations.

It is not a ban. The platforms have been asked to explain how the feature works, detail safeguards against misuse, and (for WhatsApp) delay rollout until consultations are completed. Telegram was specifically questioned on why it should retain the feature.

This reflects broader government scrutiny over anonymity in messaging apps amid traceability and security priorities.

Indian Government Issues Notice to Telegram Over Pirated Content

The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry has issued a formal notice to Telegram, directing the messaging platform to take immediate measures against the widespread piracy of films and OTT content. Telegram has been asked to submit an Action Taken Report within 15 days.

The government action aims to protect India’s creator economy, film industry, broadcasters, OTT platforms, producers, and distributors from the impact of illegal distribution of copyrighted material, sources said. This move comes amid growing concerns over digital piracy affecting legitimate content creators and the entertainment sector.

Pavel Durov Interrogated Again in France (July 8, 2026)

Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov was questioned for over six hours on Wednesday by French investigating judges in Paris. This marks his fourth interrogation since his 2024 indictment.

The session focused on allegations that Telegram enabled organized crime (including drug trafficking, child exploitation material, and fraud) through insufficient moderation and cooperation with authorities. Durov, who has been under judicial supervision since his August 2024 arrest at Le Bourget Airport, denies the charges and insists there is no evidence of his personal responsibility. His lawyers have filed appeals in French and European courts.

The long-running investigation continues; no new restrictions or trial date were announced. Durov's travel ban was previously lifted.
