Petro-Ruble: Why Western States Will End Up Buying Russian Gas for Rubles

Russia will not supply gas for free if the EU refuses to pay in rubles, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on 28 March.

"The sanctioning countries that have breached all their contracts with Russia have no right to complain that Russia breaches one in return", says Dr Paul Craig Roberts, said the Reagan administration economist.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on 23 March ordered the Russian Central Bank and the government to work out the means for ruble payments for Russian natural gas.

On 28 March, Kremlin spox Dmitry Peskov said that during the coming four days, Gazprom is expected to develop a "transparent and understandable system" in both technical and logistical terms. Once the system is established, Gazprom will inform its customers about the new rules, said Peskov, adding that Russia won't provide energy for free to those "unfriendly countries" which refuse to pay in rubles.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that he sees no signs of successful progress in the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

It appears Blinken believes that Russia's statement to reduce hostilities around Kiev are a ruse

Blinken said the announced pullbacks in Kyiv and Chernihiv may be intended to “deflect and deceive” from Russia’s true intentions, and Medinsky seemed to echo support Blinken’s sentiments, clarifying he did do not mean a ceasefire is imminent in a Tuesday interview with Russian state media.

“There is what Russia says, and there is what Russia does. We’re focused on the latter,” Blinken said.
