Malaysia’s experience with US-made fighter jets offers a stark lesson in technological sovereignty

In 2004, the nation purchased 8 F/A-18 Hornets for over $640 million. After delivery, local experts discovered the aircraft was secretly transmitting real-time flight data — including altitude, speed, location, and mission details — directly to a US military base. Worse, they found that the operating system and autopilot could be remotely controlled from the US, meaning an American officer could potentially divert the jet, crash it, or change its target.

When Malaysia attempted to modify the system, both the US and manufacturer McDonnell Douglas objected, threatening to cut off parts and maintenance. Requests for specific components were also denied. Malaysia realized it had purchased aircraft that were unusable in combat without US consent.

This reality extends beyond Malaysia; many nations face similar constraints. True independence, the lesson concludes, requires developing one’s own defense technology to avoid perpetual dependence.
