If you grew up in an Evangelical household, certainly you have heard the names of Hal Lindsey, David Jeremiah, Dave Evans Rogers, Corrie Ten Boom, and others. These names have a number of things in common. One is their undying support for Zionism. The works of Hal Lindsey in particular helped popularize support for a Jewish state in Palestine after his release The Late Great Planet Earth. In this book, he argues that the formation of Israel in 1948 is a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy and Christians are theologically bound to support the nascent country. It was the best selling non-fiction book of the 1970s according to the New York Times at 35 million copies in that decade alone. Its ideas gained even greater attention in 1978 when Rolf Forsberg and Robert Amram adapted it for a documentary. 

The influence of The Late Great Planet Earth, its sequels, and its spinoffs cannot be understated. The body of literature impelling Church support for Israel led mass adoption of this system of theology among mainline American Protestant denominations. While the unconditional support has waned in recent years, 70% of White Evangelical Christians still support the idea that, “God gave the land of Israel to the Jewish people,” according to a 2022 Pew Research Center poll. Prophecy mongers like Lindsey, Jeremiah, and Rogers certainly have had a large impact for the cause of Zionism. However, there is another common thread among these men: Carol C. Carlson

Carlson is the name of the ghostwriter and co-author on nearly all of Lindsey’s works. The Late Great Planet Earth is written entirely by this woman. Before this book, Lindsey had never written anything of this length or scope. The first editions did not list her name and Lindsey remained the public face. Carlson is listed as the co-author of prominent titles such as In my father's house : the years before "The Hiding Place" by Corrie Ten Boom, Satan is alive and well on planet earth by Hal Lindsey, The terminal generation by Hal Lindsey, Escape the coming night by David Jeremiah, Woman by Dale Evans Rogers, The handwriting on the wall by David Jeremiah, and dozens of others. According to WorldCat, the world’s largest library database, Carlson is either the primary or co-author of 21 verified works and possibly more. Surely one of the most prolific and influential theological writers of the 20th century must have at least a wikipedia page. Not so.

    Carol C. Carlson is not only a ghostwriter, but a ghost in the truest sense. The internet is virtually scrubbed of her presence. There is no authoritative biography or even news articles. Even a search of the Library of Congress’s news archive yields no results. The scant details that can be found on Carlson are from a few small blogs criticizing the practice of ghost-writing among prominent Evangelicals. A solitary, unsourced, and grainy photograph appears in one blog and on the back of several books attributed to her. This author’s ideas are in just about every Protestant home in America and influential even in some Catholic circles. Using various masks, Carlson consistently pushed a single message: Christian Zionism. Given the dearth of verifiable information, one questions if Carlson even exists. That is not to say that Lindsey or Jeremiah are the true authors of their attributed works. Rather, the ghost-writing entity known as “Carol C. Carlson” may not be a single person at all.

    Ghost-writing is common practice across multiple genres from fantasy to action. Religious books are no exception. Moreover, wealthy “authors” leverage entire teams of writers to pump out new releases. Tom Clancy is a notorious example of enormous committees putting out a running total of 36 books in his name according to his wikipedia page. On several of Clancy’s novels, the ghost-writers are amalgamated into a single name such as Mark Greaney. Greaney and other prominent Clancy writers are verifiably real people with easily found biographies. In the case of Carlson, a writer of far greater cultural import, the trail runs cold. If she is a real individual, Carlson is the most hidden, secretive, and best-selling author in American history. 

One is presented with a number of possibilities. First, Carlson is a single, verifiably real individual. The objections to that theory are laid out above. The sheer volume of works attributed to her and the lack of information about the person Carol C. Carlson is unlikely in the internet age. Second, Carlson could be one of several ghost-writers who worked in a team to write the vast body of prophetic punditry we see today. This is the most likely possibility given the penchant for “book by committee” in the literary scene. The vast spread of genres, length, and number of books for a single author is uncommon. The likelihood that some of the most prominent names in the Evangelical world all came to this single, elusive woman for their writing is also improbable. I cannot claim affirmatively that Carlson is representative of a committee or non-existent. However, the complete lack of information about this titan of Christian literature presents a hefty burden of proof on those who would claim Carlson is a single, real-life individual. 

The common thread of her attributed works is unwavering support for Israel and the idea that Jews share a separate, co-equal, and parallel covenant to Christians. Carlson’s books have done more to woo American Christians to the cause of Zionism than any other author. If Carlson is the public face behind the public face, who are her own co-authors? At this time, more research is required. It is wise to avoid speculation except to ask, cui bono?

Really wouldn't be surprised if the system started another Floydpocalypse soon. This serves several purposes:
