A bomb found under water at a dam in Mobile’s only water supply was detonated on Wednesday by the Gulf Coast Regional Maritime Bomb Squad.
Divers contracted by the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) discovered the improvised explosive device (IED) during a routine repair at the J.R. Converse Reservoir dam.
Bomb experts say the device was likely purposefully built and placed there, but MAWSS officials said they do not want to speculate on who planted it.
They contacted local and federal authorities, including the Department of Homeland Security. FBI bomb techs, along with the ALEA Bomb Squad and Daphne Search and Rescue, responded and detonated the device.
“Our top priority is keeping your drinking water safe,” said Bud McCrory, MAWSS director. “This is an unprecedented threat, and we are fortunate that this device was discovered before it could cause serious damage to our water supply or harm to individuals. We are grateful for the professionalism and competency of our law enforcement partners – as well as the quick thinking of our contractors and divers – in identifying this device and safely destroying it.”
MAWSS public relations manager Monica Allen told 1819 News the discovery was alarming. MAWSS owns 9,000 acres of federally protected land surrounding the dam.
“We say it’s protected, but anyone driving over the dam, it’s open,” Allen said.
The water system has surveillance cameras around the dam to monitor activity.
MAWSS staff work frequently on the dam. Allen said she is also thankful no one was hurt.
“Our staff is on that dam, if not daily, every other day,” Allen said. “And there are homes in that area, so you just don’t know. We live in a different kind of world now.”

Former FBI Director James Comey said Thursday that he “never” considered asking former President Biden for a preemptive pardon before President Trump returned to office last year and wouldn’t have accepted one if given.
“I don’t know,” Comey responded after CNN’s Kasie Hunt asked him whether he thought Biden might have granted him one if requested. “I wouldn’t have accepted it.”
Comey, who has been indicted by Trump’s Justice Department twice, defended his stance against accepting presidential pardons by pointing to a century-old Supreme Court precedent that doing so carried an “imputation of guilt and acceptance of a confession of it.”

Democratic Tennessee congressman Steve Cohen announced Friday that he won't seek reelection to represent District 9.
This comes after Tennessee enacted a new U.S. House map that carves Memphis into three districts.
District 9 is one of the them.
The new District 9 would start in South Memphis and stretch east all the way to Lynchburg in Moore County. Election experts have said the move would give Republicans an advantage in the upcoming elections.
The 76-year-old Cohen has represented Memphis in Congress for the past 20 years. His newly redrawn seat is now seen by election experts as a "safe Republican" seat.

The CEOs of Meta, Alphabet, TikTok and Snap have been invited back to Capitol Hill for a broad oversight hearing in June, Axios has learned.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley is planning a June 23 hearing titled "Examining Tech Industry Practices and the Implications for Users and Families:
Is This Social Media's Big Tobacco Moment?" per committee spokesperson Hannah Akey.
The hearing will look at Big Tech and AI safety oversight, Akey said, along with other issues like whistleblower retaliation.
The hearing comes as social media and AI companies are facing mounting lawsuits, including some first-time losses, and Capitol Hill gets closer to passing kids' online safety legislation.
Social media CEOs also haven't testified in Congress since 2024, when they appeared before the Judiciary Committee to discuss many of the same topics.
The committee has not received any formal RSVPs from the CEOs yet, Akey said, but discussions are ongoing.
People deserve to hear directly from CEOs, Akey said, following a Judiciary subcommittee hearing this week featuring parents pushing for stricter online legislation.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has secured a $10 million settlement in a case against Texas Children's Hospital over illegal sex changes in the form of surgeries and prescriptions being given to minors. As part of the settlement, the hospital will also be forced to fund a "detransition" clinic and treat those patients free of charge for the first five years.
The settlement follows an investigationinto the hospital begun in 2023 by Paxton's office accused of providing sex change treatments to minors after Governor Greg Abbott signed legislation banning children from getting puberty blockers and cross-sex hormone treatments.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Tehran will continue the path of negotiations whenever it feels that the United States is serious and prepared to reach a fair and balanced agreement.
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi on Friday, Araqchi said this was the second time Iran had started negotiations with the US, only for Washington to launch attacks in the middle of talks and at the height of diplomacy, which he described as deeply regrettable.
He said Iran is currently in a ceasefire situation, although the truce remains very fragile, and noted that Tehran is trying to preserve it in order to create an opportunity for diplomacy and a negotiated solution.
The foreign minister emphasized that there is no military solution regarding Iran, stressing that the country has never surrendered to pressure or threats and has resisted aggression, pressure, and sanctions.
Araqchi said that after 40 days of war, when the US became disappointed in achieving its objectives through aggression against Iran, Washington once again proposed negotiations.
He added that Iran is interested in negotiations, but only if the other side is serious and genuinely seeks real talks.
Araqchi said the main issue at present is trust, emphasizing that Iran cannot trust the Americans and that everything must therefore be defined precisely, clearly, and transparently for an agreement to be possible.
The negotiations are suffering from a lack of trust as well as contradictory messages from the US, he said.
According to Araqchi, Washington issues new and at times conflicting messages every day, which increases distrust and raises doubts about American intentions.
He reiterated that Iran has never sought nuclear weapons and said Tehran proved this by signing the 2015 nuclear agreement.
Araqchi stressed that Iran’s nuclear program has always been peaceful and that the country has consistently been ready to build confidence regarding its peaceful nature.
Referring to Iran’s enriched nuclear materials, he described the matter as highly complicated and said Iran and the US had concluded that, because they had nearly reached a deadlock on this particular issue, it would be better to postpone discussions on it to later stages of negotiations.
He said the issue is therefore not currently on the agenda for talks, but would be addressed in future phases, when Iran would naturally hold further consultations with Russia to determine whether Moscow’s proposal could help resolve the matter.
Araqchi also welcomed assistance from any country that could help the settlement process, particularly China.
He noted that China had previously played a positive role in restoring relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia and said Tehran and Beijing enjoy very good relations as strategic partners.
According to the Iranian foreign minister, Iran believes China has good intentions and would welcome any Chinese effort aimed at helping diplomacy.
He also expressed hope that progress in negotiations would eventually lead to full security in the Strait of Hormuz and a faster return of maritime traffic to normal conditions.

Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe has come under fire for making a joke about George Floyd during the Netflix roast of Kevin Hart, saying that the man whose death sparked the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots across the country was "laughing so hard that he can’t breathe."
"You’ve done good though, Kevin. The black community is so proud of you. Right now, George Floyd is looking up at us all, laughing so hard that he can’t breathe," Hinchcliffe said.
Nekima Levy Armstrong, the former head of the NAACP’s Minneapolis chapter who was arrested in January for storming a church alongside other anti-ICE agitators, said the joke was "not a laughing matter."
The phrase "I can't breathe" was frequently featured at Black Lives Matter events, referencing words uttered by Floyd as police were attempting to take him into custody.
"Again, it is not a laughing matter. We are here today to call to your attention to the fact that an egregious, disgusting joke was made about George Floyd. Here we are, about to memorialize George Floyd for year 6 after his brutal murder at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department. Our community is still experiencing grief and trauma," she said, later adding, "instead of allowing our community to grieve in peace, to celebrate George Floyd in peace, we have Netflix comedians making light of the brutal killing of George Floyd. It is unacceptable, and it is unconscionable."
