One major difference that cannot be overstated: in the COVID pandemic, as of today, there are over 60 controlled trials showing either mortality or other major benefits, and decades of safety data. When the $!@#! are we marching?

For the people who haven’t seen this study: this discusses the use of ivermectin in prevention of Covid-19 in healthcare workers. Two doses of oral ivermectin (300 μg/kg/dose given 72 hours apart) as chemoprophylaxis among HCWs reduced the risk of COVID-19 infection by 83%.

Those who have been following the position of the authorities that there is “insufficient evidence” on ivermectin will be interested to know that the world-renowned Cochrane Logo is based on a real meta-analysis. The logo’s meta-analysis of just 7 small trials (several with risk of bias concerns) has been used by Cochrane for decades to show the importance of pooling all relevant data, even from imperfect trials. Evidence from these small imperfect trials from a systematic review looking at steroids for mums of preterm babies was ignored for 10 years, leading to many unnecessary baby deaths while authorities awaited more trials.

Let’s not let the authorities make the same mistake again. In the context of the covid-19 health emergency, the stakes are much higher.
