There have been some assumptions in the media that the new JAMA article is somehow definitive on the matter of ivermectin for covid-19 treatment.
The BiRD team encourages you to see this trial conducted in Malaysia in context of the large body of evidence on ivermectin, including randomised trials, country studies and doctor/patient experiences (qualitative data).

The JAMA trial is far from gold-standard, in that it is open label, underpowered and without a funding statement. It was also conducted among high risk patients with other health problems only so may be relevant to only a subset of people.

The study was not powered to detect a difference in death rates, however fewer deaths occurred among patients receiving ivermectin compared with controls (3 versus 10 people died, respectively). This may be an important finding, which is corroborated by other scientists and frontline doctors.

The following would therefore be a more appropriate conclusion: "The study findings suggest that ivermectin given on its own to high risk covid-19 patients with co-morbidities may make little or no difference to the course of their disease; however, our study was underpowered to detect a statistically significant difference in deaths. 🕊🕊🕊https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2789362

WATCH - Dr. Peter McCullough on JAMA's recent underpowered Ivermectin study. The study showed a reduction in mortality in the ivermectin group, but the headline was written as if ivermectin failed.

"There's a signal of benefit based on over 70 studies and over 33 randomized trials where there is about a 56% benefit....When someone pitches in a 500 patient trial.. not blinded, no placebo.. and the doctors decide the endpoint, which is how much oxygen patients get, that's a biased endpoint. When the headlines say that the trial overturned the entire science on ivermectin, that's clearly an overstatement."
