What else is smoke used for? Announcing the election of a new pope? New Leader?
White smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney signals the election of a new pope, while black smoke means no decision has been reached. The smoke results from burning the cardinals’ ballots and notes after each voting round, with chemical additives used since the 20th century to ensure clear color distinction.
White smoke is produced using a mixture of potassium chlorate, lactose, and pine resin.
Black smoke comes from potassium perchlorate, sulfur, and anthracene.
The tradition of burning ballots dates to at least 1417, but white smoke as a signal began in 1914 with the election of Pope Benedict XV.
Since 2005, the ringing of St. Peter’s Basilica bells confirms white smoke to prevent confusion.

Researchers at the University of Reading also note that decades later, “Moses Rusden, King Charles II’s official beekeeper, attempted to use the beehive to justify the divine right of kings in 1679. He harked back to the language used by Thomas Hill, in the very first beekeeping treatise, by arguing that man and bee would both perish without royal leadership.”
