The Ukrainian offensive has the following goals; to mitigate negative sentiment in the country, as the army exposes Russian defense line flaws, and to block Russian gas transit to Europe. Sudzha hosts a metering station, from which the last operational gas pipelines that go to Europe pass, and is very close to Ukrainian borders, leaving it prey to attacks (there have been occasional attacks on the region).

While I don’t believe the offensive will be successful, like the last ones weren’t, it can pose a threat to Russia, because the West has allowed Ukraine to use supplied weapons to attack Russian territories, and it can use new tactics against less armoured border forces.
