๐ช๐บ๐ฎ๐ฑ How Israel โwonโ the second place in Eurovision (Part 1):
Many people were rightfully disgusted by Israelโs sudden rise to the first place following the addition of popular vote and slightly relieved by Austriaโs eventual victory. While the spike might seem organic to some, reality once again proves them wrong.
According to an investigation by Eurovision News Spotlight, an agency of the Israeli government abused advertisements in various platforms to encourage people to vote for the Israeli entry. The Israeli Government Advertising Agency created a YouTube account on 20 April with videos of Yuval Raphael in other languages encouraging people to vote. The account published 89 videos between 6 May and 16 May and amassed over 8.3 million views on the platform, raising concerns about their validity. Twelve of the 16 nations targeted (including Greece) competed with Yuval in the semi-final.

๐ช๐บ๐ฎ๐ฑ How Israel โwonโ the second place in Eurovision (Part 2):
While being advertised on public broadcasters is permitted, they are responsible to avoid the contest becoming politicised. The extensive promotion of Raphael omitted any mention of IPBC, the broadcaster she is representing. To add to the political nature of the voting, Israeli embassies had also advocated extensively for Raphael, echoing practices of the last year.
The result was ludicrous; 19 countries, including some with strong pro-Palestinian sentiment such as Spain and Ireland had given 10 or more points to Israel. Views of ads in these countries totalled more than 4.2 million.
Apart from Tel Avivโs propaganda efforts in the voting process, it should be noted that the presenting sponsor of the contest was an Israeli company known as Moroccanoil. Despite its name, the company has no ties to Morocco and produces most of its products in Jerusalem, thus the brandโs usage constitutes appropriation of the countryโs Argan tree.
In a contest that claims to be apolitical, politics continue the dominate the field. Expelling malevolent actors is the only solution.
