All are very basic, but I see those features missing over and over in indie games. Another one to add: never make a controller-only or keyboard only game — support both.

Literally open the NVIDIA Control Panel (if you're on Windows, with NVIDIA GPU and good SSD) and set Shader Cache size to 10GB.
Most of the new games will now launch faster and their performance will not degrade over time. The default value depends on many factors, but can stuck at 512MB-5GB range. Games need more.
