🇮🇳 India, July 30, 2024

🆘 After torrential rains that battered the southern Indian state of Kerala for an extended period, hillsides collapsed on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. Rivers of mud, water, and boulders flowed over tea plantations, resulting in the deaths of over 50 people.

"...the exact number is difficult to determine, as many body parts have been found in the river," the spokesperson for the state's Chief Minister, Manoj, told Reuters by phone.

Most of the victims were estate workers and their families, who were sleeping in makeshift tents at the time. According to state officials, about 350 families lived in the affected region, mainly on tea and cardamom plantations, and 250 people have been rescued so far. Many others are still missing.

‼️The landslides on Tuesday marked the biggest disaster since 2018, when nearly 400 people died due to severe flooding.

💬 This phenomenon is not new to the area. According to scientists, it may be caused by seasonal changes and ocean currents.
