A Boeing 787-9 operated by Air Europa made an emergency landing in Brazil due to turbulence. Approximately 30 passengers were injured, with ten requiring hospitalization.

🔴 Korean Air Changes Rules Due to Turbulence
July 1, 2024

✔️ Korean Air, the largest airline in South Korea, reports that their aircraft encountered six thousand instances of turbulence in the first quarter of this year, marking an 80% increase compared to the same period last year. The number of turbulence incidents faced by the flagship carrier in the first quarter of this year nearly doubled compared to the same period in 2019.

✔️ Last month, there was an incident involving a Singapore Airlines aircraft, which, due to turbulence, "dropped" 54 meters in 4.6 seconds, resulting in the death of one passenger and injuries to over 80 people. In another recent case, aboard a Qatar Airways flight, 6 passengers and 6 crew members were injured due to turbulence.

✔️ To prevent incidents caused by sudden weather changes, Korean Air has changed its onboard service rules. Now, onboard service will be concluded 40 minutes before boarding. In response, Korean Air has decided to complete cabin service 20 minutes earlier on all medium- and long-haul routes. Previously, cabin service was conducted at the beginning of descent, but now all service will be completed 40 minutes before boarding. During this time, no food, drinks, or alcohol will be served onboard.

✔️ Korean Air explained that this measure is taken to prevent injuries to passengers and crew, as ascending air currents due to temperature differences often occur during aircraft descent. In areas where turbulence is expected, the "Fasten Seat Belt" light will be turned on in advance, although passengers are advised to fasten their seat belts even when the indicator is off.

✔️ Experts warn that due to climate change, cases of "clear air turbulence" have increased, which cannot be detected by onboard radars. The main advice to airline passengers is to observe basic precautions, such as stowing larger carry-on items in overhead bins or under the seat to avoid accidents caused by "flying" baggage during turbulence.

✈️ A few days ago, on September 5, 2024, six people were injured due to turbulence on a flight from Turkey to Taiwan.

The Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Taipei encountered severe turbulence two hours before landing. Four passengers and two crew members were injured, with two of them being hospitalized. The cabin was in chaos: food was scattered on the floor, and passengers were holding onto their seats in panic. The plane landed safely, and medical assistance was provided to the injured.

🇦🇷🇩🇪 Severe turbulence injures 11 passengers on Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt on overcrowded Boeing aircraft

🆘 According to the airline, the injured received medical attention immediately after the aircraft safely landed at Frankfurt Airport on November 12 at 10:53 AM. "Unfortunately, five passengers and six crew members sustained mostly minor injuries," said a Lufthansa representative to Reuters, confirming the report from DPA.

Industry publication AirLive.net reported that when the aircraft reached an altitude of 35,000 feet, attempting to avoid bad weather, five passengers who were not wearing seatbelts were injured.

FlightRadar24 data showed that the aircraft's speed dropped from 511 knots (588 mph) to 180 knots (280 mph) in less than a minute, then increased again to the cruising speed of 517 knots.

After landing at Frankfurt Airport, the injured were transported to a hospital.

‼️ This incident recalls a similar one in May, where severe turbulence led to the death of one passenger from a suspected heart attack and 30 injuries when a Singapore Airlines flight encountered strong turbulence over the Irrawaddy River basin in Myanmar. This highlights that such incidents are becoming more frequent, underscoring the need for more in-depth study of the issues surrounding turbulence in aviation.
