🇧🇷 Unusual Spiral Cloud in São Paulo State, Brazil

🌪 On Friday, January 17, a giant spiral-shaped cloud resembling a tornado caused a stir among residents in the Sorocaba area and nearby cities, including Votorantim, Salto de Pirapora, Alumínio, and Itapetininga. Many witnesses shared striking images of the phenomenon on social media, noting its impressive and unusual appearance.

❗️According to the meteorological company *Metsul*, the cloud was formed due to a hot and humid tropical air mass, typical for this season in São Paulo state. The rotation observed in the supercell that generated the cloud was a result of wind shear — the difference in speed and direction of air currents at different altitudes. This created a mesocyclone — a vortex within the storm.

As explained by São Paulo State Civil Defense, this phenomenon is classified as a “supercell.” Due to the wind rotation within the cloud, it takes on a tornado-like appearance, which both fascinates and alarms observers.

🇧🇷 Flooding in São Paulo: The City Struck by a Powerful Storm

🌧 On January 24th, a powerful storm hit São Paulo, flooding streets, metro stations, and leaving approximately 38,000 properties without electricity. For the first time, the Civil Defense issued a “severe warning” for the capital, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

🆘 In just three hours, the city received twice the monthly average rainfall, overwhelming local infrastructure. The Fire Department recorded 219 calls related to flooding and waterlogging. Additionally, between midnight and 8:20 PM, there were 114 reports of fallen trees and 14 incidents of structural collapses in the city and surrounding metropolitan areas.

🎥 Social media is flooded with videos showing dramatic scenes of submerged streets, avenues, and metro stations. The floodwaters swept away cars, and people were forced to climb onto the roofs of their vehicles for safety. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.

‼️ This extreme weather event serves as a stark reminder of the growing challenges posed by climate-related events in major urban areas. Authorities and emergency services are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact and restore normalcy to the affected regions.
